The aims of our paper was to evaluate higher education in media and communication sciences in Italy, taking intoaccount the whole education offering in this field as well as the socio-demographic features and job opportunities of itsgraduates. It is a picture somewhat in contrast: in ten-year period 2004-2013, despite the students enrolled at theuniversity courses in media studies and communication sciences were significantly reduced compared to previousdecade, nevertheless their levels of employment are still the highest among those of graduates in the other social andpolitical sciences. In summary, we examined the cultural reasons that would explain some persistent difficulties facedby media culture in order to gain citizenship among the valued knowledge provided by higher education.

; The article shows the gender inequality of the Italian university teaching staff and the failure of policies that rely on neoliberal beliefs and values of academic competition. First, we document the persistence of female disadvantage in university by analyzing time series on Italian university researchers. Then we compare the data of Italian faculty with that of the European Union as a whole. Finally, we present the conclusions of a qualitative research based on in-depth interviews with some professors who work in the Italian university, and we highlight the limits and perverse effects of the meritocratic method and neoliberal feminism in the resolution of inequality. This type of feminism is not concerned with the elimination of real inequalities in the system, but with the promotion of women to the top of Higher Education institutions and, in general, in society. In other words, it is not really interested to transform the world by eliminating the structural conditions that produce inequality, but only tries to enhance in each woman –according to neoliberal ethics– the competitiveness of her own human capital.

Worldwide university politics take for granted the primacy of Global- Northern paradigm. In the last decades, Higher Education policies have been shaped by global devices of neoliberal governance, such as the Competitiveness Global Index elaborated by the World Economic Forum. We examine the ever encroaching HE evaluation policies and illustrate how, in the framework of the current "Evaluative State", university has been rebuilt according to the priorities of the "neoliberal market agenda". What is at stake is a "new spirit of evaluation" that mirrors the current "new spirit of capitalism". Opposite to the neutral and disembodied models of "ideal-academic", which treat knowledge as a Northern, white, gendered, middle class monopoly, we argue that "academic quality" displays embedded/embodied features devoid of universalistic issues. Taking inspiration from Raewyn Connell (2019), we propose "another possible university", appointed with less strict epistemic instances, to rethink Higher Education in terms of some fresh "breaking" ideas: "Meridian thought" (Cassano, 1996), "slowness" (Berg & Seeber, 2016), "multi-versity" (Braidotti, 2013), "subversity" (De Sousa Santos, 2018), "decolonization" (Mbembe, 2016), "deparochialization of research" (Appadurai, 2013).

After the introduction of the most recent University evaluation reforms, this article aims at presenting the first findings of a research project on these reforms and the evaluation processes carried out so far in the field of social and political sciences. In particular, the research wishes to investigate the relational dynamics, the behaviors and the values of the academic profession with special attention to the scientific activity, but without putting aside the implications for the teaching, management and the "third mission" activities. Inserted in the line of studies on higher education and evaluation well consolidated in Italy, the research is characterized by the added value of connecting the criticaltheoretical level to the empirical one.
