The article explores the tactical alliance between the Communist movement and the Free Officers and it shows that in the years under consideration Nasser was exposed to a leftist analysis of Egypt and the world. Nasser could think of the Marxists as useful consultants rather than as threatening rivals because, in fact, they never were a threat to him: they never created a mass movement, never diffused their ideas widely and were never seriously prepared to take power. Because the Communist movement of the 1940s and early 1950s was divided into a multiplicity of political parties, the message it issued was disjointed. (DÜI-Asd)
