This article presents the design, implementation and outcomes of AlpConnectar, a Swiss project that exploits technologies for digitally-supported language exchange (LE) in primary schools. Launched in 2013, the project involves three Swiss cantons where different languages are spoken (namely German, French and Italian) and respectively taught as foreign languages since the third grade of primary school. In the first section of the paper the linguistic composition of Switzerland is briefly presented and the current methodologies and approaches in foreign language teaching in the country are introduced. After a literature review of online LE practices, the AlpConnectar project is presented, along with a LE example to illustrate how it works. The final sections present the results of the project, based on data collected from both pupils and teachers. The results seem to suggest that while digital technologies offer significant benefits for LEs, they are no silver bullet, and their impact depends on a number of contextual variables.

Il confronto generazionale nell'ambito delle tecnologie digitali e stato fortemente segnato dal concetto di "nativo digitale", che contrappone le nuove generazioni ai piu anziani ?immigrati digitali?. Diversi studi confutano queste tesi, o quantomeno le mettono in discussione, anche se il dibattito e ancora aperto. L'indagine ICILS offre dati solidi per approfondire il rapporto tra giovani e tecnologie, in particolare contestualizzandolo in un contesto geografico e sociale puntuale nel quale le istituzioni scolastiche non hanno finora assunto un ruolo importante e definito. Questo studio cerca di rispondere alle seguenti domande: Quali caratteristiche del Sistema educativo favoriscono lo sviluppo di competenze digitali? Esiste una relazione tra eta di inizio dell'uso delle tecnologie, frequenza d'uso e tipologia d'uso e le competenze digitali nei diversi ambiti? In conclusione si cerca di aprire la riflessione al ruolo della scuola e delle politiche educative nell'uso dei dispositivi digitali e di internet da parte degli allievi. Im Gegensatz dazu wurden etwas ältere Menschen der vorangehenden Generationen als "digital immigrants" bezeichnet. Auch wenn verschiedene Studien solche Zuschreibungen kritisieren, hält sich diese Differenzierung in gegenwärtigen Diskussion. Die ICIL-Studie bietet relevante Daten, um das Verhältnis von Heranwachsenden und ihrem Umgang mit neuen medialen Technologien besser verstehen zu können. Unsere Analyse fokussiert auf ein geographisch bzw. soziostrukturell ausgewähltes Gebiet, wo die schulischen Institutionen bisher keine Leitungsrolle übernommen haben. In diesem Kontext versucht die vorliegende Untersuchung, folgende Fragen zu beantworten: Welche Eigenschaften des Schulsystems fördern die Entwicklung von Kompetenzen im Bereich Medien und Informatik? Lassen sich zwischen dem Alter der Erstnutzung, der Nutzungsfrequenz, der Art der Nutzung von digitalen Medien, und den digitalen Kompetenzen von Lernenden Zusammenhänge finden? Die Diskussion versucht Überlegungen zur Rolle der Schule und der Schulpolitik zur Nutzung von digitalen Geräten und dem Internet durch Jugendliche darzulegen. (DIPF/Orig.)

AbstractThe Covid-19 pandemic has presented an opportunity for rethinking assumptions about education in general and higher education in particular. In the light of the general crisis the pandemic caused, especially when it comes to the so-called emergency remote teaching (ERT), educators from all grades and contexts experienced the necessity of rethinking their roles, the ways of supporting the students' learning tasks and the image of students as self-organising learners, active citizens and autonomous social agents. In our first Postdigital Science and Education paper, we sought to distil and share some expert advice for campus-based university teachers to adapt to online teaching and learning. In this sequel paper, we ask ourselves: Now that campus-based university teachers have experienced the unplanned and forced version of Online Learning and Teaching (OLT), how can this experience help bridge the gap between online and in-person teaching in the following years? The four experts, also co-authors of this paper, interviewed aligning towards an emphasis on pedagogisation rather than digitalisation of higher education, with strategic decision-making being in the heart of post-pandemic practices. Our literature review of papers published in the last year and analysis of the expert answers reveal that the 'forced' experience of teaching with digital technologies as part of ERT can gradually give place to a harmonious integration of physical and digital tools and methods for the sake of more active, flexible and meaningful learning.

In order to counter systemic bias in peer production projects like Wikipedia, a variety of strategies have been used to fill gaps and improve the completeness of the archive. We test a number of these strategies in a project aimed at improving articles relating to South Africa's primary school curriculum and find that many of the predominant strategies are insufficient for filling Wikipedia's gaps. Notifications that alert users to the existence of gaps including incomplete or missing articles, in particular, are found to be ineffective at improving articles. Only through the process of trust-building and the development of negotiated boundary objects, potential allies (institutional academics in this case) can be enrolled in the task of editing the encyclopaedia. Rather than a simple process of enrolment via notification, this project demonstrated the principles of negotiation required for engaging with new editor groups in the long-term project of filling Wikipedia's gaps
