After describing urban growth patterns in Algeria (size and growth of urban population; recent distribution of central places) this paper focuses on four major factors, that influenced the population distribution and originated demographic imbalance: emigration, regroupment centres policy, rural exodus, and economic development policy of the Independent Government based upon decentralization. In spite of the government's enormous efforts to achieve rural-urban balance through various measures at different levels, the spatial distribution and especially the rate and pattern of urbanisation still remains a very serious population problem.
