The conditions of single mothers dealing with breakdown of social policies in Morocco
Faced with a standard-setting arrangement and cultural framework of reference which prohibit sex and childbearing outside marriage, single mothers in Morocco lead a difficult life marked by social stigmatisation and precarious living conditions. A historical perspective " demystifies" the experience of single motherhood that has always been experienced by women, but managed differently depending on the specific features of each era. Single motherhood, until now disguised so as to cover up the transgression it represents, is now perceived less as a taboo but still as an assault on the established order and on social expectations. For these marginal but now visible situations, which mainly involve women living precariously, what is the situation now with regard to state support ? This article questions the thinking that underpins social policies supporting vulnerable women in Morocco.
