A symbolic interaction (Blumer, 1969; Mead, 1934; Prus, 1996; Prus & Grills, 2003) approach was taken to study the collective event (Prus, 1997) of creating a research-based dance on pathways to care in first episode psychosis. Viewing the co-creation of a research-based dance as collective activity attends to the processual aspects of an individual's experiences. It allowed the authors to study the process of the creation of the dance and its capacity to convert abstract research into concrete form and to produce generalizable abstract knowledge from the empirical research findings. Thus, through the techniques of movement, metaphor, voice-over, and music, the characterization of experience through dance was personal and generic, individual and collective, particular and trans-situational. The dance performance allowed them to address the visceral, emotional, and visual aspects of their research which are frequently invisible in traditional academia.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to make visible the ways in which peoples' experiences of mental ill health are coordinated and produced in the workplace setting.Design/methodology/approachThis institutional ethnography draws from data collected from 16 informants in one Canadian industrial manufacturing plant to explicate how texts organize activities and align worker consciousness and actions with company expectations of a "bona fide" illness.FindingsThe findings demonstrate how a "bona fide" illness is textually mediated by biomedical and physical work restrictions, thus creating a significant disjuncture between an experiential and ruling perspective of mental ill health.Research limitations/implicationsThe work of employees living with self-reported depression becomes organized locally and translocally around the discourse of "mental illness is an illness like any other." This presents a profound disjuncture between the embodied experience of being too unwell to mentally perform work duties, and the textually coordinated practices of what it means to access sick time for a "bona fide illness" within a biomedical-based attendance management protocol.Originality/valueThe current study adds to the literature by shedding light on the disjuncture created between the embodied experience of mental health issues and the ruling perspective of what constitutes a bona fide illness, adding a unique focus on how people's use of attendance management-related supports in the workplace.

"This article is deliberately unconventional in style and reflects a conversation between the authors as they embark on an arts-based health research study to explore the theoretical, methodological and ethical challenges faced by scientists, artists and trainees who are 'doing' arts-based health research (ABHR). Their narrative is based on reflexive and observational field notes that we kept during the research process. They draw on Ellis and Bochner's (2000) autoethnographic practices of writing reflexively about the ways in which the self informs one's work as a researcher. As a beginning, they each reflect upon their own perspectives on the importance of the arts in their lives. The authors then move to a conversation between them regarding using the arts in the process of both doing research and disseminating research that illustrates some of the key issues in the field." Women with disability face participation barriers based on long-held misconceptions around their identity that adversely affect their health, income levels, and access to education and employment. It has been noted that photographs produced through photovoice methodology can help dismantle attitudinal and environmental barriers that people with disability continue to confront, but this method is rarely assessed for impact. In this protocol paper, we merge principles of feminist theory, photovoice methodology and integrated knowledge translation to generate 1. exhibition-quality participant-created photography on identity, 2. discussion around and insight into inclusion for women with disability and 3. a public exhibition to understand any impact these photographs may have on audiences and discriminatory barriers. Photographs, text, discussions and audience feedback are to be interrogated through thematic and narrative analysis. By aiming our arts-based research findings for a public audience, we hope to advance understanding of female identity and inclusion.

The first recorded instance of whole-body-mapping for research purposes is a comparison of women's identity and the concept of the reproductive system in rural Jamaica and the UK. It was later developed in a structured workshop process in South Africa to give voice to the experiences of HIV positive individuals, decrease stigma, and advocate for provision of antiretroviral medication. Whole-body mapping involves tracing around a person's body to create a lifesized outline, which is filled in during a creative and reflective process, producing an image representing multiple aspects of their embodied experience. Body-mapping holds promise as a qualitative, participatory research method to produce and disseminate knowledge. However, it is unclear how it is being used, by whom, and in what context. This article presents the findings of a systematic review of body-mapping in the published literature. The review identifies various implementations of body-mapping in research, therapeutic, and educational contexts. The degree of emphasis on social justice, knowledge translation, research, and therapeutic benefit varies a great deal, as does the intent and use of body-mapping. While body-mapping holds promise, more empirical investigation would be valuable in determining its characteristics in research, clinical, educative and political spheres.

Ganzkörper-Kartografien wurden für Forschungszwecke erstmals in einem Projekt genutzt, in dem es um einen Vergleich von weiblicher Identität und Reproduktion zwischen ländlichen Regionen in Jamaika und in Großbritannien ging. Danach wurde dieser Ansatz im Rahmen eines in Südafrika durchgeführten Workshops weiterentwickelt mit dem Ziel, den Erfahrungen HIV-positiver Menschen zum Ausdruck zu verhelfen, der Stigmatisierung entgegenzuwirken und die Forderung nach der Bereitstellung anti-retroviraler Medikamente zu unterstützen.Bei einer Ganzkörper-Kartografie werden die Körperumrisse einer Person nachgezogen, um einen lebensgroßen Umriss zu generieren, der innerhalb eines kreativen und reflexiven Prozesses gefüllt wird, sodass ein Bild entsteht, das die multiplen Aspekte verkörperlichter Erfahrung repräsentieren soll. Es handelt sich bei Körper-Kartografien um eine qualitative, genauer im Bereich partizipativer Ansätze angesiedelte Methodik, deren Aufgabe es ist, Wissen zu generieren und zu distribuieren. Es bestehen aber nach wie vor Unsicherheiten, wie, von wem und in welchem Kontext die Methode zu nutzen ist.Deshalb präsentieren wir in diesem Beitrag eine systematische Bestandsaufnahme der verfügbaren Literatur. Es zeigt sich, dass sich Nutzungen von Kartografien insbesondere in Forschungs-, therapeutischen und erzieherischen Kontexten finden. Digital storytelling refers to a 2 to 5 minute audio-visual clip combining photographs, voice-over narration, and other audio (Lambert, 2009) originally applied for community development, artistic and therapeutic purposes, and more recently adapted as an arts-based research method. To date, no systematic review of the use of digital storytelling in a research capacity, to generate information about a phenomenon has been conducted. Accordingly, our aim was to provide a systematic review of digital storytelling in research. The review identified 25 articles representing 23 discrete studies that met inclusion criteria. A thematic analysis of results indicated that digital storytelling in research was especially appropriate for use with marginalised groups, and was most commonly used in this context. There was some variation in the extent to which digital storytelling in research adhered to the principles with which it was originally developed. Surprisingly, although digital storytelling provides a ready-made knowledge translation product, few research projects employed the digital stories generated to this end. Across research projects, participants reported several benefits of digital storytelling. While some disadvantages were noted, overall, these were outweighed by the benefits of using a respectful, participatory research practice.

The aim of this paper is to describe a novel form of qualitative inquiry, dialogical inquiry, which allows for multiple investigators from different positions or traditions to collaboratively interpret qualitative data, engaging in a process of mutual influence to enrich both themselves and the process of analysis. We provide a clearly operationalized method, which is inspired by the philosophy of Bakhtin, as reimagined through practices from Open Dialogue, a social network–based approach to dialogical psychotherapy. Drawing on a specific text analysis of Jay Neugeboren's novel "Imagining Robert," we demonstrate how our dialogical inquiry approach can bring reflexive practice in qualitative research to life through mutual reflections among investigators. We show how dialogical inquiry can generate appreciation for multiple perspectives, awareness of affective and epistemic positions, and new knowledge production. This approach could be particularly suited for research teams that wish to actively generate new kinds of knowledge, or to privilege the voices of coresearchers from diverse social, political, and epistemic positions.

Die Verwendung kunstbasierter Forschung hat unser Verständnis dessen, was evident ist, verändert, und die Komplexität und Multidimensionalität deutlicher werden lassen, die mit der Produktion neuen Wissens verbunden sind. In diesem Scoping-Review kunstbasierter Gesundheitsforschung inspizieren wir die Breite und Vielfalt begutachteter Veröffentlichungen in diesem Feld, skizzieren wichtige Ergebnisse und benennen künftige Forschungsrichtungen. Ausgehend von einer Literaturrecherche haben wir 71 Studien identifiziert, die unseren Kriterien entsprachen. Sie variieren mit Blick auf Genres, Forschungsdesigns und behandelte Thematiken. Insgesamt folgen aus der Nutzung von künstlerischen Verfahren die Möglichkeit eines größeren Engagements sowohl der Forschungsteilnehmer/innen als auch des Publikums, die Chance, Kommunikation anzureichern und Forschung auch jenseits der Universitäten zugänglich zu machen und ein Zugang jenseits der zumeist üblichen Interviewverfahren.Drei zentrale Forschungslücken wurden identifiziert: die Notwendigkeit eines kritischen Dialogs zur Frage des Impacts von kunstbasierter Forschung, zu deren angemessener Evaluation und zu ethischen Herausforderungen, die mit diesem Ansatz verbunden sind. Wir gehen davon aus, dass die Öffnung qualitativer Methodologien für kunstbasierte Studien nicht einfach eine zusätzliche Möglichkeit der Datenerhebung und der Dissemination der Ergebnisse bedeutet, sondern neue Wege des Wissens bzw. des Umgangs mit Wissen beinhaltet. Dies bedeutet möglicherweise eine grundsätzlichere Neuorientierung im Sinne eines paradigmatischen Wandels in der Art und Weise, wie wir uns als Forschende der sozialen Welt nähern mit einem innovativen Set an Techniken, die wir nutzen können, um traditionelle qualitative Forschungsmethoden anzureichern.

This article provides an account and discussion of research processes used in a contemporary study of early school leaving in Ontario, Canada. The Ontario Early School Leavers Study was conducted in conversation with 193 young people who left school prior to graduating, their educators and parents. The study was informed by a review of international literatures which point to the need for innovative social approaches and youth-attuned methodologies in the study of early school leaving. We present our research processes as informed by this literature and then present new analyses that illustrate critical social processes in early school leaving. The findings present unique data to show three pathways to early leaving and a constellation of risk and protective situations encountered by these young people along the way. Risk situations included the daily social workings of poverty, low socioeconomic status, the need to take on early adult roles, "place", academic and social disengagement, negative relations with families and/or school personnel, and inflexible or unsupportive school structures. Protective situations were encountered in supportive families; from parents and teachers; in schools that were caring, flexible, and proactive; and in processes of self determination. The perspectives of the young people are discussed in relation to the international literature and the perspectives of 71 parents and educators who participated in the study. Impacts on practices in secondary schools suggest that early school leaving be recognized and treated as a heterogeneous, complex social process occurring at and across the nexus of families, schools, youth cultures and communities.

Using the Canadian context as a case study, the research reported here focuses on in-depth qualitative interviews with 36 researchers, artists and trainees engaged in 'doing' arts-based health research (ABHR). We begin to address the gap in ABHR knowledge by engaging in a critical inquiry regarding the issues, challenges and benefits of ABHR methodologies. Specifically, this paper focuses on the tensions experienced regarding academic legitimacy and the use of the arts in producing and disseminating research. Four central areas of tension associated with academic legitimacy are described: balancing structure versus openness and flexibility; academic obligations of truth and accuracy; resisting typical notions of what counts in academia; and expectations vis-à-vis measuring the impact of ABHR. We argue for the need to reconsider what counts as knowledge and to reconceptualize notions of evaluation and rigor in order to effectively support the effective production and dissemination of ABHR.

AbstractA 2012 change in Australia's immigration policy saw increased resettlement of refugees with disability, with a large number fleeing political instability in Iraq and Syria. The evidence on service disparities for resettled refugees with disability and their families is sparse. The study aim was to explore, from multiple stakeholder perspectives, the experiences of people with disability from Iraqi and Syrian refugee backgrounds resettled in Australia, with a view to informing future services and supports. Interviews with nine family members of 11 people with disability from Iraqi and Syrian refugee backgrounds and seven practitioners working in refugee specific services. Persons with disability had a range of disabilities including intellectual or developmental, physical and sensory. Interviews were translated from Arabic to English as required and analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes described the practices and service interventions that addressed disparities: (1) Getting the basics right: Refugee specific services played a crucial role during early settlement in ensuring access to medical, health and social care including diagnosis, medication, equipment, housing and financial support. (2) Ongoing access to disability supports: Refugee specific services assisted families with longer‐term supports once immediate needs were met, including accessing services through the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Participants described benefits such as having access to interpreters and Arabic‐speaking staff, demonstrating services' attention to cultural sensitivity and safety, and problems including waiting times, bureaucratic processes and housing needs. Refugee specific services, disability services and health services should collaboratively develop and implement strategies to tackle the intersectional nature of issues resettled refugees with disability and their families encounter in Australia. These should be informed by the experiences of people with disability and family members from refugee backgrounds and privilege holistic practices that avoid reliance on one sector alone to address the complex needs of refugees with disability.
