AbstractThe emergence of the ever-growing anti-corruption movement from the early '90s onwards has proven itself to be of considerable importance in how we understand and explain global inequalities as well as in redefining corruption as a lack of transparency. This paper examines the timing and content of this international anti-corruption movement. It argues that, following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the deepening of an increasingly transnational capitalism, anti-corruption discourse has arisen as a new version of the 'white man's burden', a justification for intervention into the domestic politics of less powerful states as well as an explanation for their relative poverty. Concurrently, the anti-corruption movement has functioned to push states into increasing their autonomy with respect to local interests and fractions of capital in order to become more subservient and hospitable to transnational capital as a whole.

AbstractThe political 'explosion' that took place in Greece was a symptom of a systemic and deep‐rooted legitimation crisis of the Greek state. This essay examines some of the causes of this crisis, how the political space in which this explosion occurred was produced, and possibilities for continued political antagonisms and struggles.Résumé L''irruption' politique qui a eu lieu en Grèce était un symptôme d'une crise de légitimité systémique et profonde de l'État grec. Ce texte s'intéresse à certaines causes de cette crise, aux modalités de production de l'espace politique dans lequel s'est produite cette irruption, ainsi qu'aux possibilités de voir perdurer conflits et antagonismes politiques.

Contemporary attempts to locate political power metaphorically "above" & "beyond" the nation-state raise legal/formal questions about the state & political power that may yield misleading conclusions. The state is not a unitary actor & thus, power is never really spatially located inside or outside the state. It is better to discuss power in terms of non-spatially determined political communities & the fragmented space of capitalism. Thinking about the space of state as symbolic & epistemic leads to a reconsideration of strategic problems for democracy. In globalization, political subjects still have territoriality, & resistance to capitalism is still fragmented, so counterhegemonic projects & resistance to the state must take place pedagogically. 18 References.
