Balancing powers: university researchers thinking critically about participatory research with young fathers
In: Qualitative research, Band 13, Heft 3, S. 265-284
ISSN: 1741-3109
The Talking Dads Project brought together young fathers, an NGO and university researchers to explore the experiences of young fathers in a UK seaside city. Young fathers took a lead role in developing the content of, and conducting, interviews with peer participants. Drawing on an analytical framework derived from participatory research literature, this article provides an analysis of five critical processes that created intense debate and became sites for negotiation of the delicate balance of powers between participants. These included young fathers' initial engagement, the translation of their research ideas into research tools, research ethics such as confidentiality and duty of care, the academic researchers' role in making adjustments to facilitate comprehensive, in-depth data collection, and the differential impact of the research on the lives of all involved. The learning emerging from this evaluation of the research process contributes to the understanding of the challenges of participatory research and the value of flexibility in responding to challenges and constraints.

The role of law in welfare reform: critical perspectives on the relationship between law and social work practice
In: International journal of social welfare, Band 15, Heft 1, S. 19-26
ISSN: 1468-2397
This article considers the complex relationships between law, welfare policy and social work practice, in order to address the question of what role legal frameworks might play in achieving welfare policy and professional practice goals. It traces how law has developed as a core component of professional practice, and challenges some of the false expectations placed upon it. It then draws on findings from an international knowledge review of law teaching in social work education to propose a model for understanding how professional practice incorporates legal perspectives, and proposes ways in which legal frameworks can provide positive and constructive vehicles for accountable practice.
Emerging from out of the shadows? Service user and carer involvement in systematic reviews
In: Evidence & policy: a journal of research, debate and practice, Band 1, Heft 2, S. 173-193
ISSN: 1744-2656
English
The systematic review methodology literature refers to the importance of involving stakeholders, including service users and carers, in the research. However, compared with other aspects of the methodology, this aspect of conducting systematic reviews is underdeveloped and the practice of involvement appears highly variable. This article draws on the experience of working with service users and carers in one systematic review to review the barriers to participation and the components of effective involvement. It suggests that quality standards can be identified for service user and carer involvement in systematic reviews, which will benefit policy and practice development.

Empowering practice in social care
205p. : ill. ; 23cm. ; In answer to popular demand from students and practitioners alike, Braye and Preston-Shoot have produced a guide to understanding the complex area of community care. What are the core components of the Government's community care policy? What do terms like partnership, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice mean? This book provides a simple exposition of the concepts and value-base underpinning community care policy and practice. Written in a jargon-free style, it goes beyond the how-to approach of much of the existing social care literature and examines the principles and values on which professionals involved in welfare provision base their work. It addresses issues of power and partnership in professional practice and identifies dilemmas arising from the relationship between Needs, Rights and Resources, between Autonomy, Paternalism and Empowerment. It tackles the choices and uncertainties faced by those making decisions about service provision, and offers survival strategies to professionals under stress.
