This study was conducted with a dual purpose. The first was to explore the theory and history of employment equity in Canada in general and in the Canadian military in particular. The second was to prepare a report on the findings as to why personnel, particularly designated groups under employment equity, choose to leave the military. The intent was to determine if there were significant differences in reasons for leaving between men who make up the majority of the Canadian Forces and designated group members, that in turn could be used to determine if systemic barriers were contributing factors. The study was conducted by comparing data for all who left the military from January 1994 to December 1996 with data from personnel who voluntarily completed an exit questionnaire upon leaving, and then with gender and ethnic information from the 1995 Canadian Forces Diversity Study. Overall the results were consistent for women and men--both citing family impact as the primary category of reasons for leaving. Theresults were less consistent among aboriginal peoples and visible minorities who reported higher instances of career dissatisfaction. Caution is advised in interpreting these results as overall there was a low rate of response from an groups (about 20%), an increased completion rate with rank progression, inconsistent completion rate by occupation and small overall sample of aboriginal peoples and visible minorities. Recommendations for increasing the validity of the exit uestionnaire include making completion mandatory, simplifying the questionnaire and the process for completion, targeting designated groups as well as junior personnel and non-traditional occupations to complete the questionnaire, and instituting a program to refer designated groups to the reserves.

This paper is written in response to the Walters and white (1989) review article "Heredity and Crime: Bad Genes or Bad Research?" Walters and white's criticisms are often global statements of disapproval or name‐calling rather than useful, analytic statements. Unfortunately, when they become specific, they are usually in error.

This study examines the criminal arrest records of a Danish birth cohort of 28,884 men to test the hypothesis that specialization exists for violent offending. Property offending is included for comparison. Specialization in violence is found to exist for offenders with more than three arrests, and specialization in property offending, for offenders with fewer than four arrests. Knowledge of past violent offending is discussed as a potentially valuable part of the predictive equation of future violence.

As the Internet's presence in health care grows more pervasive, an increasing number of health care providers have begun to implement eHealth innovationsin their practice. The interactive health communication system (IHCS), one such eHealth solution, provides consumers with information, informal support, and a venue for communication. Investing in eHealth: What it Takes to Sustain Consumer Health Informatics examines the evolution of the IHCS and the significant changes in organizational culture and operational systems that may be required for successful and sustained implementation.This book explores the development of a model (funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in 1998) to predict and explain the degree of success of such implementation efforts. This model allows an institution to benchmark its progress towards IHCS implementation and advises administrators where to invest resources to increase the chance of successful implementation. A set of case studies highlights key features of the model, each study describes an attempt by an organization to implement the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS), a proven IHCS. After examining the success or failure of each particular implementation, the book suggests steps that could have been taken to address weaknesses identified by the model. Investing in eHealth culminates in a set of general guidelines for any health care provider striving to successfully employ the model, and suggests directions for future research.

This paper examines apraxis-focused pedagogical approach to professional formation in community work and youth work developed over four decades at the Department of Applied Social Studies, Maynooth University. The approach is rooted in collectivity, participation, and empowerment, and is based on Freirean and feminist analysis of social structures and embedded systemic discriminations including racism. It aims to develop critical praxis in students through an integrated curriculum grounded in theory and practice, a dialectic of classroom and fieldwork learning, interactive assessments, active student participation in their practice learning, mentoring from departmental staff and fieldwork supervisors. Taken together these elements model 'pedagogy as praxis'.

Ensuring that federally funded health research keeps pace with the explosion of health data depends on better information technology (IT), access to high-quality electronic health data, and supportive policies. Because it prominently funds and conducts health research, the U.S. federal government needs health IT to rapidly evolve and has the ability to drive that evolution. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology developed the National Health IT Priorities for Research: A Policy and Development Agenda (the Agenda) that identifies health IT priorities for research in consultation with relevant federal agencies. This article describes support for the Agenda from the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the Veterans Health Administration. Advancing the Agenda will benefit these agencies and support their missions as well as the entire ecosystem leveraging the health IT infrastructure or using data from health IT systems for research.

Background: The roots of advanced practice nursing can be traced back to the 1890s, but the Nurse Practitioner (NP) emerged in Western countries during the 1960s in response to the unmet health care needs of populations in rural areas. These early NPs utilized the medical model of care to assess, diagnose and treat. Nursing has since grown as a profession, with its own unique and distinguishable, holistic, science-based knowledge, which is complementary within the multidisciplinary team. Today Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) demonstrate nursing expertise in clinical practice, education, research and leadership, and are no longer perceived as "physician replacements" or assistants. Saudi Arabia has yet to define, legislate or regulate Advanced Practice Nursing. Aims: This article aims to disseminate information from a Saudi Advanced Practice Nurse thought leadership meeting, to chronicle the history of Advanced Practice Nursing within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while identifying strategies for moving forward. Conclusion: It is important to build an APN model based on Saudi health care culture and patient population needs, while recognizing global historical underpinnings. Ensuring that nursing continues to distinguish itself from other health care professions, while securing a seat at the multidisciplinary health care table will be instrumental in advancing the practice of nursing.
