Violence & fear are two constants in Latin American cities & have entailed a loss of citizenship. This work describes Caracas urban development & its relationship with political changes & the increase of violence in the 1960-2006 period. The various forms of violence are here explored: criminal violence, juvenile gangs' violence, & violence as a reaction to violence. Also, from three probabilistic population surveys (1996, 2004 y 2007) carried out by the Social Sciences Laboratory (Laboratorio de Ciencias Sociales, lacso), the feeling of fear among citizens is analyzed, & the inhibition processes resulting from fear to violence & its impact on the loss of freedom & the right to the city are identified.
