This book discusses a wide and rich range of participatory methods. The first part of the book focuses on Reflect and the Internal Learning System (ILS). Reflect began as a tool for group work to develop literacy and critical reflection, while ILS was designed to provide information for programme evaluation at the same time as supporting community members to reflect on and change their lives. Both have evolved considerably over a number of years. In the second part of the book, the authors reflect on what enables and constrains creativity, adaptation, and innovation, using examples of many different methodologies to illustrate their discussions. These reflections come from two broad perspectives: from innovators who have all worked principally as independent development consultants and advisors, and from researchers. These two common positions in the world of development and aid give rise to different challenges in creating and using participatory methodologies.
The use of participatory research techniques to provide policy-makers with information about poor people's perspectives on poverty became increasingly common in the 1990s. This book focuses on the use of participatory research in poverty reduction policies and presents a series of participants' reflections on recent and ongoing processes. This study explores the role migration has played over a long period of time, in western Bihar, India. This case study challenges the assumption that migration would be a recent phenomenon, and argues that to understand the history of this area one needs to take account of the complex interaction between migration and development. Migration has been a livelihood strategy for many groups within the area, and the study explores how migration has been caused by and in turn influences poverty and livelihoods for men and women, and how these relationships have changed over time. Migration is a common & essential livelihood strategy in the risk-prone environment of Sahelian West Africa. But migration is not a passive reaction to economic & environmental forces. Patterns of movement are determined by context-specific & complex dynamics, mediated by social networks, gender relations, & household structures. IDS-based research on sustainable livelihoods illustrated this in two locations in Mali: (1) a village in the Sahelian dryland with different & gendered migration patterns of various ethnic groups; & (2) exceptional patterns in the Sudano-Sahelian cotton region with extensive & long-lasting engagement in small cocoa & coffee plantations in Cote d'Ivoire. 1 Table, 1 Map, 24 References.
