The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of 71 Canadian manufacturing and mining industries. Profit is used to measure effectiveness while size, diversification, competition, capital intensity, foreign control, age and structure are the independent variables. The results show that foreign control, age and diversification have significant relationships to profit. Size, capital intensity, structure and competition showed no significant effect on the measures of profit.RésuméCette étude porte sur les résultats, représentés par les profits, de 71 industries minières et manufacturières au Canada. La taille, la diversification, la concurrence, l'intensité de l'emploi du capital, le contrôl étranger, l'âge et la structure de l'industrie sont les variables indépendantes. On découvre que le contrôle étranger, l'âge et la diversification sont reliés aux profits de façon statistiquement significative. Il n'en va pas ainsi pour la taille, l'utilisation du capital et la concurrence.

The purpose of this paper is to examine variation in managers, professionals, and clericals as constituent groups of the administrative component. The independent variables are size, complexity, capital intensity, foreign control, competition, and age of industry. Two sets of hypotheses were developed — the first set to predict variation in numbers within each group, and the second set to predict variation in the relative mix of the three groups. The variation in the numbers of all administrators could be attributed to variables that increase the need for a "technostructure''. However, variables that would contribute to uncertainty and instability resulted in a relatively greater proportion of managers and professionals, but fewer clerks.RésuméCet article traite des cadres, des spécialistes et des employés de bureau, les trois sous‐groupes qui composent l'Administration. Les variables indépendantes sont la taille, la complexité, l'intensité de l'emploi du capital, le contrôle étranger, la concurrence et l'âge de l'industire. On a développé deux séries d'hypothèses. La première prédit les fluctuations du nombre de membres de chacun des sous‐groupes, et la seconde l'importance relative de ces derniers. Les fluctuations du nombre global de membres de l'Administration sont expliquées par les variables qui représentent la demande pour la technostructure. Par ailleurs, les variables liées à l'incertitude et à l'instabilité entraînent un accroissement du nombre des cadres et des professionnels, par rapport à celui des employés de bureau.

In 1964, in response to a growing number of strikes, the recently-formed independent Government of Kenya established a new method of resolving industrial conflict. The purpose of this short article is to describe the operation and effects of the Kenyan Industrial Court, and to draw attention to some features that have affected its efficient operation.

This paper examines the formulation and change of strategy. To do so the strategies of Pacific Western Airlines, Canada's third largest airline, are tracked from its founding in 1945 until 1984. The paper concludes that the company has maintained a strong loyalty to the basic strategic direction established by its founder, Russell Baker. A comparison is also made between the findings presented here and those from research, in general following the same basic paradigm for making inferences about strategy information.RésuméLe but de cette étude est d'examiner l'élaboration et les changements de stratégie. Pour ce faire, on y étudie les stratégies de Pacific Western Airlines, la troisième compagnie aérienne au Canada, depuis sa fondation en 1945 jusqu'en 1984. L'étude conclue que la compagnie est demeurée très loyale à la stratégie établie à l'origine par son fondateur Russell Baker. Les résultats de la présente etude sont comparés aux résultats d'études menées selon le měme paradigme afin de tirer des conclusions quant aux principes généraux d'élaboration de stratégie.Les auteurs voudraient remercier deux réviseurs anonymes pour leur aide et leur encouragement.

This paper identifies two archetypes in large Canadian law firms to show how ideas of professionalism and partnership are changing, due in part to shifts in discourses in the wider institutional context. These changes in discourse themselves alter the interpretation of organizational structures and systems. This theme is explored through the concept of tracks and sedimentation. We explore the emergence of an organizational archetype that appears not to be secure, and which results in sedimented structures with competitive commit ments. The geological metaphor of sedimentation allows us to consider a dia lectical rather than a linear view of change. Case studies of two law firms show how one archetype is layered on the other, rather than representing a distinct transformation where one archetype sweeps away the residues of the other.

AbstractThe paper examines the stated reasons for recent mergers between members of the (former) Big Eight accounting firms. The reasons are expressed in terms of hypotheses about the perceived advantages of very large size and the hypotheses are tested using 1986‐9 data from the top 1000 Canadian companies. The focus of the paper is thus on the link between perceptions, merger behaviour, and the history and trends of the audit industry.RésuméCet article examine les raisons invoquées pour les fusions récentes entre les membres des (autrefois) grosses huit maisons de comptabilité. Les raisons sont énoncées en termes hypothètiques des avantages perçu de la grosseur; les hypothèses sont examinées utilisant les statistiques de 1986‐9 des 1000 plus grosses compagnies canadiennes. Cet article se concentre sur les liens entre les perceptions, la fusion conduite, l'histoire et les orientations de l'industrie de vérification.
