THIS ARTICLE ASSESSES EUROPEAN UNION STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT SUPPORT AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF IT TO THE POLICIES OF THE IMF AND WORLD BANK IN THE CASE OF ZIMBABWE. IT ARGUES THAT CONTRARY TO THE CLAIMS OF THE EU COMMISSION, AID FROM THE CONVENTION HAS BECOME DOMINATED BY THE ADJUSTMENT CONCERNS AND THAT THESE ARE CLOSELY TIED TO THE PRIORITIES OF THE BRETTON WOODS INSTITUTIONS.

RECENT CHANGES TO THE LOME CONVENTION HAVE SUGGESTED THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AFRICA AND EUROPE HOLDS OUT LITTLE HOPE FOR A SOLUTION TO AFRICA'S ECONOMIC ILLS. THIS ARTICLE ARGUES THAT THE CONVENTION IS INCREASINGLY SUBORDINATE TO WIDER TRENDS IN THE GLOBAL POLITICAL ECONOMY. IT ASSESSES THE PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE ACP-EU RELATIONS AND CONCLUDES THAT IF THE CURRENT DOMINANCE OF NEOLIBERAL PRESCRIPTIONS IS TO BE COUNTERED, IT IS VITAL THAT ANY SUCCESSOR AGREEMENT LIVES UP TO LOME'S STATES PRINCIPLES OF CREATING A NEW AND MORE EQUAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH.

Although there is now a thriving subdiscipline of economics and law, so far economists working on the theory of the firm have paid relatively little attention to earlier legal doctrines. One neglected juridical school of thought is the 'real entity' theory developed by William Jethro Brown (1868–1930) and others. Some writers have recently suggested that this has implications for our understanding of the nature of the firm.

Gender in Plato's thought is examined in terms of his depiction of the nature of wisdom and philosophizing, the relation of philosophy to power and the 'politics' of the Republic. The guiding thread is Plato's personification of truth and philosophy as female. (JLN)
