"In Confucian Concord, Federico Brusadelli offers an intellectual analysis of the Datong Shu. Written by Kang Youwei (1858-1927) and conceived as his most esoteric and comprehensive legacy to posterity, the book was eventually published only posthumously, in 1935, being "too advanced for the times" in the author's own opinion. Connecting the book to the author's intellectual biography and framing it within the intellectual and political debate of the time, Brusadelli investigates the conceptual and philosophical implications of Kang's 'global prophecy', showing how an apparently 'utopian' and 'escapist' piece of literature was actually an attempt to save (at least ideally) the imperial political order, updating the traditional Confucian universalism to a new, 'modern' world"

Abstract
Using a special issue of the Chinese journal Gaizao published in 1921 as a starting point, this article intends to trace some conceptual articulations of federalism (lianbang) and self-government (zizhi) promoted by intellectuals and activists in early twentieth-century China. The analysis will show how Chinese federalists shaped their arguments through a series of historical and philosophical references, translating a prevalently "Western" concept into Chinese discourse, at the same time transplanting it into the traditional political debate and traditional historical narrative. Part of the argument will also be concerned with the identification of the conceptual reasons behind the failure of federal projects in China especially at the turning point of the mid-1920s, as the "modern" federal blueprint eventually fell under the category of "feudalism" and "warlordism," thus deteriorating into an "anti-modern" nemesis.

This paper explores how the breakup of Yugoslavia was interpreted, commented on, and used for internal and international political purposes in China, with a focus on the role played by key concepts such as "federalism" and "sovereignty" in consolidating the Chinese interpretation of those dramatic events, and ultimately in shaping the CCP's pro-Milošević stance in the dramatic unfolding of the conflict in Kosovo. In particular, the preoccupation with separatism and international humanitarian intervention, and the interpretation of the Yugoslav dissolution as a federal failure by the Chinese elite, help link the global event (the collapse of the Balkan political order) to the local Chinese debate on centralization and decentralization, an issue that had been polarizing the CCP since the launch of the "reform and opening" agenda by Deng Xiaoping at the end of the 1970s.

In the late Qing and early Republican period, Switzerland was mentioned by prominent figures like Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, who praised its democracy, and in the 1920s the Swiss political system became a source of inspiration for "provincial patriots" in Hunan or for Chinese federalists such as Chen Jiongming. The present paper intends to survey these political encounters and perceptions, focusing on the transformation of the Swiss institutional model and historical experience into a "political concept", and on the reasons for its final rejection as an unrealistic utopia unsuited for China.

V poznem obdobju dinastije Qing in zgodnjem republikanskem obdobju so Švico omenjale ugledne osebnosti, kot sta bila Kang Youwei in Liang Qichao, ki so hvalile njeno demokracijo, v dvajsetih letih pa je švicarski politični sistem postal vir navdiha za »provincialne domoljube« v Hunanu in kitajske federaliste, kot je Chen Jiongming. With his book, Kang somehow anticipated Mao's use of the traditional ideal of datong as a revolutionary concept. In my paper, I will discuss a debate on the Datong Shu from the 1950's, when a young Li Zehou (1930–) defended Kang's utopianism from the accusations of 'conservatism' moved by orthodox Marxists. Li's "benevolent look" on Kang may serve as an interesting anticipation of his later efforts to synthesize Marxist and Confucianism.

In 2008, Jin Guantao and Liu Qingfeng published the result of a decade-long work on conceptual transformation in late imperial and early Republican China. Their Studies in the History of Concepts (Guannian shi yanjiu) marked an important step in the development of conceptual history in China, after the timid tendencies of the early 1980s and the growing attention of the following two decades.
