Die Entwicklung kostengünstiger Sensoren und die Verfügbarkeit massenhaft vorhandener meteorologischer Messdaten, vorwiegend des Luftdrucks, der Lufttemperatur und der Luftfeuchte, ermöglichen eine räumliche und zeitliche Verdichtung herkömmlicher Messnetze. Dies eröffnet damit neben der Wissenschaft auch Kommunen, Betrieben und anderen Einrichtungen völlig neue Möglichkeiten, z. B. bei der Umweltüberwachung und Beschreibung des Lokalklimas. Die leichte Verfügbarkeit und Bedienung der Sensoren ermöglicht es auch dem Laien, diese zu betreiben und sich an den Messprogrammen zu beteiligen oder sogar an der Auswertung mitzuwirken. Diese neue Möglichkeit der Sammlung und Einbeziehung von Messdaten außerhalb der Standardmessnetze wird als Crowdsourcing bezeichnet. Der Beitrag dient der Vorbereitung einer entsprechenden VDI-Richtlinie und beschreibt die zur Verfügung stehende Sensortechnik, die Sicherung der Datenqualität und die Möglichkeiten der Datenbearbeitung.
