Abstract: The global turn is central to the study of Europe's many migration histories—outwards, inwards, and internal—and encompasses transatlantic, imperial and post-imperial, and other global arenas. Benefitting from a wealth of pathbreaking scholarship that often focuses on macro-level histories, this article advocates zooming in on individual interpretations and experiences. By doing so, it argues, historians can open up nuanced perspectives that risk becoming submerged in studies where, rather paradoxically, actual migrants are displaced by an emphasis on overarching migration phenomena. Taking the late-modern era as its focus, it traces the global dimensions of two lives spanning almost two centuries to open out broader questions, not least about race and ethnicity. Jacob Riis (1849-1914) and Gérald Bloncourt (1926-2018) were both leading documentary photographers who shared a deep commitment to social reform and the amelioration of working-class conditions. Each recorded migration histories on camera and in writing, thereby enabling an analysis of multi-media representations emanating from the same source. That both were of migration backgrounds themselves—Riis having moved from Denmark to the United States and Bloncourt from Haiti to France—renders the images and texts they created particularly resonant. Their own origins and mobile lives proved crucial to their interpretations of the wider flows of people that have connected Europe with different global settings—and continue to do so today.

Bénéficiant d'un grand nombre de travaux novateurs souvent centrés sur des histoires au niveau macro, cet article prône un cadrage plus serré portant sur les interprétations et les expériences individuelles. Ce faisant, il soutient que les historiens peuvent ouvrir des perspectives nuancées, qui risquent cependant d'être submergées au sein d'études où, paradoxalement, les migrants réels se trouvent supplantés en raison de l'accent mis sur les phénomènes migratoires globaux. Focalisé sur la fin de l'ère contemporaine, l'article retrace les dimensions globales de deux vies s'étendant sur près de deux siècles afin de soulever des questions plus larges, notamment sur la race et l'ethnicité. The secret to longevity and healthier communities lies in a systems-level lifestyle-based approach. There are currently 5 regions across the world where people live relatively longer, healthier, and happier lives. Taking lessons from these areas, dubbed "blue zones," we can help improve health and wellness at the population level. There are already cases of these Blue Zones Projects implemented in communities across the United States, which have had demonstrable, positive impacts on public health. Collaboration between the public and private sectors at the local level can make these changes to improve lifestyles and reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the healthcare system.

AbstractPost-1945 Spanish and Portuguese emigration and immigration histories encapsulate the Iberian region's long-standing interconnectedness with the wider world (particularly Latin America and Africa) and other parts of Europe alike. Portugal and Spain have both been part of multiple migration systems as important sending countries that ultimately experienced an international migration turnaround owing to their transition to democracy, decolonisation, and accession to a European Union in which internal freedom of movement counted among its core principles. With the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and Europe's migration crisis of the 2010s serving as its vantage point, this article considers these topics as they intersect with issues that include nationality and citizenship, race and racism, and religion and Islamophobia in multicultural Spain and Portugal.

Along with noting Dutch and British media responses to the European Parliament's House of European History (HEH) both before and after it opened in 2017 that reflect Eurosceptic and outright hostile attitudes about the European Union, this article focuses on the presence and absence of colonial and global histories and peoples in the HEH's permanent collection. It contrasts the critical interrogation of modern European imperialism up until the First World War with the lack of attention paid to late imperialism, decolonisation, and postcolonial legacies together with the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. As a result, the HEH has thus far missed the chance to probe how European overseas empires and their collapse intersected with the EU's origins and neglected the EU's ongoing reach outside the continent on account of overseas territories still held by its member states. It also has not effectively engaged with the presence and impact of peoples of migrant backgrounds from outside the EU's current borders, who have not been given the European history they deserve. This results in an incomplete global history of today's multicultural Europe.This article is part of the forum 'The House of European History'. Die reacties geven de Euroscepsis en ronduit vijandige houding ten opzichte van dit initiatief weer. Dit artikel richt zich vervolgens op de aan- en afwezigheid van koloniale en globale geschiedenis en van de geschiedenis van niet-westerse volkeren in het HEH. Het artikel contrasteert de kritische reflectie op het moderne Europese imperialisme tot aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog met het gebrek aan aandacht in de permanente collectie voor het naoorlogse imperialisme, de dekolonisatie, de postkoloniale erfenissen, het Ottomaanse Rijk en Turkije. Dit is een gemiste kans. Het HEH kan daardoor ook geen aandacht besteden aan de manier waarop de Europese overzeese kolonies, diens ondergang en het ontstaan van de EU elkaar kruisten. Daarmee gaat het HEH ook voorbij aan het voortdurende contact van de EU met staten die buiten het Europees continent liggen en nog steeds tot het gebied van EU-lidstaten behoren. Een ander punt van kritiek is de weinig doeltreffende aandacht voor inwoners met een migratie-achtergrond van buiten de grenzen van de EU. Zij krijgen op deze manier niet de Europese geschiedenis die hen toekomt. Het resultaat van dit alles is een onvolledige globale geschiedenis van het huidige multiculturele Europa.
