Like many other Central and Eastern European countries Lithuania has been experiencing significant socio-spatial transformations since the 1990s. One of the most prominent of these transformations is associated with the residential suburbanization of its major cities. The suburbs are the only areas in Lithuania where the population has been growing in recent decades, while the country has lost almost one quarter of its population. Although, extensive urban growth is a common feature for all large Lithuanian cities, it is more noticeable in Vilnius. Due to its historical and geographical context, Vilnius, and the region surrounding it, is in an area where rural-urban transformation also means transformation of the social, ethnic, and political landscape. The aim of this article is to obtain more insight into the recent process of the fast, but weakly controlled, residential suburbanization of Vilnius. The focus is on understanding the scale of suburbanization and its impact on the social and physical environment. In this study, we use quantitative data on population and residential constructions as well as presenting some visual material. Our results show that the new suburban-style settlements are spatially dispersed. New residential areas have emerged within the city limits, along its administrative boundary as well as in the most peripheral parts of the Vilnius metropolitan region. In terms of the morphology and physiognomy, a great suburban diversity exists in and around Vilnius, and different building styles are mixed creating a rather chaotic landscape, with little interference from urban planners and no clear vision for the future.

The study is based on a cartographic analysis of statistical data using the population censuses of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia describing the socio-demographic composition of the population. The results show that the residential differentiation is clearly increasing in all countries. The metropolitan regions have a growing concentration of younger and higher socio-economic status populations, and with the increasing distance from the metropolitan regions, the negative trends in change are more pronounced. The results of the study show that there are no significant differences between the Baltic States in terms of territorial redistribution of the population as well as the changes in the socio-demographic spatial structure, however the spatial pattern of the processes differs. The results confirm the assumption made at the beginning of the research that although the Baltic States have experienced similar economic and political transformations, the different settlement systems determine different trends in socio-demographic spatial structures and their consequences in the Baltic States.

Political and economic reforms in the 1990s led to changes in ethnic composition, and the attention given to the processes of ethnic-segregation has started to increase. While most studies focus on capital cities, much less is known about second-tier cities. This article examines the interrelationships between ethnic and social segregation in the metropolitan areas of Lithuania (Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda). The authors use Lithuanian census data from the years 2001 and 2011 to obtain insight into the recent changes in the socio-spatial differentiation of the largest ethnic groups: Lithuanians, Poles, and Russians. The results show a clear relationship between the socio-economic and ethnic status of the residents of metropolitan areas and, therefore, suggest that ethnic segregation is strongly linked to the general processes of social segregation. The findings also show that the higher the proportion of a certain ethnic minority group in an area, the higher the proportion of lower (social) status residents in this group. In addition, in such cases, ethnic minorities often tend to concentrate in particular areas within the cities.

After Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries joined the European Union, the issue of urban shrinkage assumed a new research approach, with most discussions focusing on deindustrialization and population decline in postsocialist countries. Scholars have identified that shrinking cities form a large share of Europe's large cities, however, they stressed that CEE is the current locality of emigration and declining birth rates. Lithuania represents one such CEE country that has experienced drastic depopulation. Depopulation is a significant challenge for non-metropolitan cities, their residents, and decisionmakers. This chapter introduces urban shrinkage in Lithuania with a case study of Šiauliai, the fourth largest city and a regional center of Lithuania. This chapter is based on the same logic (drivers, consequences and governance) presented in the 'heuristic model of urban shrinkage' (Haase et al. 2014). The drivers of shrinkage in Šiauliai fall into three main groups: political, economic and demographic. National and local governments are looking for ways to deal with shrinkage, but, so far, efforts have not been very successfully. This chapter comprises of quantitative and qualitative analyses, including statistics on the drivers and consequences of shrinkage, as well as recent information collected via semi-structured interviews with local authorities.

The paper analyses two interrelated fields: residential differentiation in the Vilnius metropolitan area on the basis of socio-economic status and of political alignment. Data from the 2001 and 2011 censuses were used to investigate socio-economic and ethnic segregation and data from the parliamentary elections of 2000 and 2012 were used for the analysis of political alignment. Indices of segregation and isolation were calculated, and the main occupational groups were used as a proxy for socio-economic status. GIS tools were used to visualise existing spatial differences. Though most indices indicated quite low levels of segregation, the situation was changing. The wealthiest and poorest groups tend to live more and more separately. The political preferences of the different social groups differ and differentiation of political field is increasing. The paper reveals socio-political spatial interrelations in the metropolitan area which have a unique ethnic structure. Our findings suggest that socio-economic structure is a major factor determining the degree of differentiation of electoral alignment in the metropolitan area. The different political preferences of the different ethnic groups could be related not simply to ethnicity but rather to socio-economic status.
