The Human Dimensions of Global Change: An International Programme on Human Interactions with the Earth was initiated in June 1987, supported by the UN & several other international organizations as a social science research program to be conducted 1990-2000 to better understand human causes of global environmental change, to find solutions, & to chart a future course. The goals, conceptual orientations, responsibilties, opportunities, & proposed organizational structure of the program are described. Issues in the design of an international program are enumerated, & a plan to be submitted to donor organizations participating in the research is outlined. Six topics chosen by the steering committee for initial development as pilot projects are listed. 1 Table, 4 Illustrations, 1 Appendix, 28 References. M. Malas
