From its birth as an amateur hobby, through its inception into professional academia and to the present time, anthropologists have asserted that the primary subject matter of its attention is fast disappearing. The concept of the "disappearing savage," it is suggested here, has provided both a rationale for the existence of social and cultural anthropology as well as a ruse or mirror for our own sense of modernity.

There are suggestions in the recent literature that since professional anthropology grew enormously during the colonial period, anthropologists of the time implicitly advanced the interests of colonial production and hegemony. A careful examination of relevant sources results in a contrary interpretation. In the course of demonstrating the mythical existence of "colonial anthropology," this paper also raises questions about the present anthropological engagement with "development" wherein anthropologists are explicitly advancing the aims and interests of capitalistic transformation.

Ten years ago there was more talk and writing about non-alignment. The leaders of non-aligned states today seem less inclined than before to go public with common attitudes and to present themselves as such. Bandung in 1955 and Belgrade in 1961 were occasions when non-aligned states came together to discuss their place in contemporary affairs. Since then there have been no other meetings and there have been very few statements about his specific role. Was non-alignment just a passing fad, a temporary phase in the development of the new and recently independent states? Or on the contrary, as alliances, is it something so accepted in international politics and national orientation, that we must take it as a fact? After two decades we are at an opportune moment to look back and re-evaluate both the claims and the nature of the non-alignment, the degree of its reality and its possibilities of moving forward.
