"Offering unique coverage of an emerging, interdisciplinary area, this comprehensive handbook examines the theoretical underpinnings and emergent conceptions of intercultural mediation in related fields of study. Authored by global experts in fields from intercultural communication and conflict resolution to translation studies, literature, political science, and foreign language teaching, chapters trace the history, development, and present state of approaches to intercultural mediation. The sections in this volume show how the concept of intercultural mediation has been constructed among different fields and shaped by its specific applications in an open cycle of influence. The book parses different philosophical conceptions as well as pragmatic approaches, providing ample grounding in the key perspectives on this growing field of discourse. The Routledge Handbook of Intercultural Mediation is a valuable reference for graduate and postgraduate students studying mediation, conflict resolution, intercultural communication, translation, and psychology, as well as for practitioners and researchers in those fields and beyond"--

This paper traces the ways in which culture has been integrated into linguistic research in the past 30 years. Recently, more and more authors seem to cautiously refrain from considering culture in their linguistic studies. One reason for this cautiousness may be found in cultural anthropology's concerns on the deterministic effects of considering culture as a concept of research at all. This paper proposes a concept for precise descriptions of culture in interaction avoiding the risk of imposing culturalist interpretations from a researcher's perspective. To this aim, approaches from ethno-methodology's membership categorization analysis (MCA) are combined with Judith Butler's assumptions on the performativity of discourse and interaction.

Research studies on the management of cross-cultural conflict in organizations are put into an analytically structured synoptic model that helps to reveal a wide range of forms and of the extent of the assumed influence of culture on social interaction in organizational settings. Evaluations of competent conflict management strategies derived from these theories will differ respectively. Furthermore, the model may illustrate clusters of contemporary research vs idle approaches of research that may hide some potential for future studies. To bypass the influence of theories on the analysis of given conflict situations, this article will present a discourse analytic approach to discovering interactants' subjective notions of culture, which will be illustrated by means of an empirical example.
