Recent developments in maintenance prescribing and monitoring in the United Kingdom
After a brief historical review of British drug legislation and public and governmental attitudes, this paper describes the wide range of policies and practices that have appeared since the explosion of illicit drug abuse in the 1960s. The spectrum goes from a reluctance to prescribe at all to maintenance on injectable opiates. Comparisons are made with differing attitudes to the availability of abortion in public health services. Compared with 5 years ago, about three times more methadone is being prescribed. There is a steady increase in prescriptions for injectable methadone but heroin maintenance is still rare. The "British System" permits great flexibility in the choice of opiates for maintenance. Some amphetamine-prescribing programmes also exist. Hair analysis for drugs to monitor levels of both prescribed and unprescribed drugs is a welcome and promising alternative to undignified and often misleading urine tests.

An Approach to Organizing a Management Accounting Curriculum
In: Issues in accounting education, Band 15, Heft 2, S. 211-235
ISSN: 1558-7983
In recent years, numerous tools such as activity-based costing, the balanced scorecard, and target costing have gained prominence within business organizations (Kaplan and Cooper 1998; Kaplan and Norton 1996; Ansari et al. 1997). Nonetheless, traditional management accounting practices such as standard costing and contribution margin analysis continue to be prevalent (Szendi and Elmore 1993). The traditional topics, when coupled with all the recent advancements, create a sizable body of knowledge that presents a challenge to management accounting educators, who bear the responsibility of organizing this subject matter into a coherent whole. In an effort to aid professors wrestling with this challenge, this article presents a new framework for organizing an entire management accounting curriculum. The article also includes one possible application of the framework that is being used at Miami University. The benefits of adopting the framework include: (1) less redundancy within the curriculum, (2) logical distinctions between the topics taught in each course, and (3) more opportunities for in-depth coverage of particular content areas.

Land Commitments in Alaska
The Federal government of the United States has, over a number of years, entered into provisional commitments with various owners and agencies in respect to areas of land in Alaska, which, in aggregate, exceed the land area of the State by 22%. It is now under pressure from sundry agencies and interest groups to bring additional areas into existing systems of conservation without due study of the problems involved. There will be a consequent lessening in the chances of the State and its Native peoples achieving economic self-sufficiency within a programme of planned land use and protection of the environment. There is need for a single manager of Federal lands, unaffiliated with any existing agencies.
