This paper is a contribution to the debate of a foundational moment in the history of Guatemala: the coup d'etat of March 1982. The author wants to explore how political order rationalities are involved in war. Using a different analytical focus in relation with prevalent accounts & interpretations, he develops a new understanding of that event. He makes use of sources so far unexplored. The paper intends to prove that: (1) the coup could have been prevented, since at some moments there were alternative options & courses of action; (2) the main reason for the coup was the U.S. failure to persuade the army to withdraw from politics & concentrate on war, which would had simultaneously democratized the political regime; & (3) the presence & decision of the U.S. government is the key to the intelligibility of that event.
