The article provides comparative overview of features of conventional and unconventional political participation in 7 world regions basing on the findings from the 6th wave of the World Values Survey, the world's largest academic program in social and political sciences. Indices of conventional and unconventional political participation are used to describe the patterms of political participation inherent to different world regions.

This book presents the principal findings of a unique and in-depth study into the birth of democracy and the market economy in fifteen post-communist countries.

This article analyzes the "realist" support for the current regime as well as the support for democracy as a set of "idealist" principles in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It also analyzes political support for nondemocratic regimes as alternatives to democratic governance. The main conclusion of this article is that mass public support for democracy as the best form of government encompasses an absolute majority of citizens in Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, and Belarus as well as a relative majority of Russian citizens. Political support for the current regimes declined between 1992 and 2002 and collapsed in Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Armenia. This collapse of public support for the current political regime contributed to the "revolutions" in Georgia and Ukraine. The proportion of supporters for authoritarian regimes in Russia and the other post-Soviet countries decreased from about one-third to onefifth of their respective electorates. This cross-national study provides empirical evidence of increasing support for democracy as an ideal form of government and a corresponding decrease in support for autocracy in eight political regimes in the Commonwealth of Independent States area in the period from 1992 until 2002.

Mit dem "Neuen Demokratien Barometer" (NDB) als Monitor werden in dem Beitrag soziale, wirtschaftliche und politische Trends im Transformationsprozeß in Osteuropa analysiert. Die Trends auf der makroökonomischen Ebene der Haushalte werden aufgezeigt. Es wird festgestellt, daß das mikroökonomische Phänomen des "Schlangestehens" als allgemeiner Indikator für die makroökonomische Transformation in Richtung mehr Marktwirtschaft dient. Die Trends auf der makroökonomischen Ebene der nationalen Volkswirtschaften werden skizziert. Auf der Makroebene des politischen Systems zeigt sich, daß die neuen Demokratien die Zustimmung der Bevölkerung erhalten, die anfängliche politische Euphorie allerdings bereits gedämpft ist. Außerdem wird im Rahmen des NDB mit der Einstellung zum demokratisch legitimierten Parlament und zu den Parlamentsparteien die individuelle Wahrnehmung der Reversibilität respektive Irreversibilität der politischen Transformation gemessen. To understand the impact of reunification upon Germans, we must make before and after comparisons across time, and also across Central Europe. The first section shows that from the perspective of comparative Communist regimes, East Germans have been doubly advantaged, in former times because of belonging to a relatively prosperous part of the Soviet bloc and since reunification as subjects of a 'ready-made state' with democracy and a wealthy social market economy. Analysis in the second section of the impact of reunification on West Germans shows that a significant proportion feel less satisfied than before, whereas the opposite is the case for East Germans. The third section introduces comparisons with Austria. Like the Federal Republic, it has enjoyed the advantages of democracy and a market economy, but without the trauma of division and reunification. (German Politics / FUB)

Mit dem New Democracies Barometer (NDB) wird ein demoskopisches Untersuchungsinstrument vorgestellt, das speziell auf die Problematik postkommunistischer Übergangsgesellschaften zugeschnitten ist. Die Verfasser legen Ergebnisse vor, die mit Hilfe des NDB im Herbst 1991 und 1992 in Osteuropa gewonnen wurden. Behandelt werden zunächst die vielfältigen Dimensionen wirtschaftlichen Verhaltens und wirtschaftlicher Wertvorstellungen, bezogen sowohl auf die Beurteilung der eigenen wirtschaftlichen Situation als auch der volkswirtschaftlichen Entwicklung insgesamt. Ein zweiter Schwerpunkt betrifft den Aufbau der für Zivilgesellschaften konstitutiven intermediären Institutionen sowie die Entwicklung demokratischer Wertorientierungen auf politischer Ebene. Wenn auch eine beträchtliche Differenzierung von Einstellungen sichtbar wird, ist der Prozeß des sozialen Wandels insgesamt doch eher durch ein Moment der Ungleichzeitigkeit als durch Polarisierung gekennzeichnet.
