The social expenditure in 30 European countries over the period 1970-2011 is examined, applying static and dynamic panel estimators in order to identify the determinants of social expenditure. After a brief introduction and a survey of the economic literature on this issue, we discuss the data and briefly introduce the applied methodologies. Empirical results, in line with previous researches, suggest that real per capita GDP growth, unemployment rate, general government consolidated gross debt, and openness to trade have a direct impact on real social expenditure. Moreover, some political factors, such as government fragmentation, political globalization, and democracy degree contribute to explain the variability of social expenditure. L'obiettivo del saggio è confrontare le politiche di austerità dei governi Thatcher e quelle di alcuni governi europei di oggi. Infatti, la situazione del Regno Unito alla fine degli anni Settanta è per molti aspetti simile a quella di molte economie europee attuali: crisi di produttività e crescita, peggioramento dei conti pubblici, scarsa fiducia nei policymakers. Using time series techniques, this study explores the relationship between trade deficits and budget deficits in Italy in the period 1970-2010. Empirical findings show that current account balance and government budget are I(1) processes. Cointegration tests reject the presence of a long-run relationship between these variables. "Reaganomics" is a popular term used to refer to the economic policies of Ronald W. Reagan, the 40th U.S. President (1981–1989), which called for widespread tax cuts, decreased social spending, increased military spending, and the deregulation of domestic markets. Con il referendum del 23 giugno 2016 il Regno Unito ha sancito la propria uscita dall'Unione Europea (UE), con una maggioranza del 51,9%. È illuminante, alla luce di questo avvenimento per certi versi inaspettato, rileggere il discorso che Margaret Thatcher – primo ministro britannico dal 1979 al 1990 – tenne al Collegio d'Europa di Bruges, nel settembre del 1988. La Lady di Ferro, come riconobbe lei stessa nell'attacco del proprio discorso, è sempre stata di-pinta come un'accanita antieuropeista. Eppure, sin dai primi passaggi rimuove questo falso mito, riconoscendo i britannici come eredi della cultura europea, con legami potenti con il continente Europa, e rievocando le dominazioni romana, celtica, sassone, danese, normanna e angioina. Passa poi a riconoscere il profondo legame tra la cultura britannica e quella europea, vedendo la rule of law come portato del pensiero classico e medioevale europeo e della cristianità. A questo proposito è singolare la frase in cui la Thatcher unisce la fede cristiana, l'individualismo e il credo britannico nella libertà personale e negli altri diritti umani. Figlia di un droghiere metodista, la donna che ha sconfitto i sindacati, al punto da convincere anche i Laburisti che fosse ora di liberarsi della loro influenza, sembrerebbe una che è andata all'opposto delle origini metodiste. Eppure, quel pizzico di non-conformismo di Maggie che ha plasmato il partito conservatore in maniera non reazionaria – a differenza di altri partiti di destra in altri paesi – forse deriva dal nonconformismo religioso in cui è stata cresciuta. Le scelte politiche da lei compiute erano difficili da collocare o prevedere. The aim of this paper is to empirically assess the relationship between government size and economic growth. Using time series methodologies applied to annual data for Italy, the effect public expenditure, unemployment and fiscal reforms on economic activity have been analysed. The data used in these analyses have been collected and shown in Forte (2011), and they cover the very long-period 1861-2011. Our results show the presence of a non-linear relationship between the size of public sector (measured by the share of government expenditure over GDP) and the economic growth rate for Italy. In general, the presence of an inverted "U-shape" curve emerges for the last two decades, suggesting that expenditure cuts might faster GDP dynamic. This result is in line with recent empirical literature about this issue. "BARS curve" relates the size of Government (rounded by the share of public expenditure) to economic growth. This paper aims at analyzing the empirical evidence in a 13-EU Member State group, referring to the period 1970-2008, using both time-series techniques and panels. After a brief introduction, a critical survey of the economic literature about this subject is shown; then some specifications of "BARS curve" are estimated, arguing on results. The paper analyses the relationship between trade balance and government budget for the APEC countries over the 1980-2013 years. Using a panel data techniques, a 2- variable VAR is estimated. Empirical findings show that for the whole APEC members as well as for the ASEAN sub-sample a bi-directional causality is discovered, while for the American sub-sample the Neo-classical view holds. Moreover, the forecast errors decompositions seem confirm this analysis. Cointegration tests reveal the existence of a long-run relationship between these two variables, with most of the coefficients close to 1, although several ASEAN countries represent exceptions. This paper aims to assess the relationship among fiscal variables (government revenue and expenditure) in Sub-Saharan African countries. Using yearly data for the period between 1980 and 2011 in fifteen ECOWAS countries, a weak long-run relationship between government expenditure and revenue emerge, but only in the case of WAMZ countries. Granger causality analysis show mixed results for WAEMU countries, while for four out of six WAMZ countries (Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone) the "tax-and-spend" hypothesis holds, since government revenue would drive the expenditure. ; http://www.economics-ejournal.org/economics/journalarticles/2013-13/

We use data from the new ISTAT-BES database to estimate the socio-economic determinants of subjective well-being in Italian regions between 2004 and 2016. Empirical findings show that subjective well-being is positively associated with education, income and social relations. Our findings imply that governments should improve subjective well-being increasing the level of investment in education, deepening economic growth, reducing income inequality and promoting social relations. ; https://www.usc.es/economet/reviews/aeid2111.pdf

L'esperienza della politica di bilancio nell'Italia del secondo dopoguerra è stata caratterizzata dall'applicazione impropria e perversa delle politiche economiche tradizionali ispirate alla finanza funzionale keynesiana, una circostanza le cui responsabilità ricadono su una classe politica che, anche ai fini del mantenimento del consenso, ha lasciato che si formassero ampi disavanzi di bilancio strutturali (quindi pro-ciclici) soprattutto a partire dai turbolenti anni Settanta. Malgrado in quel decennio gli alti tassi di inflazione (sostenuti dalla prassi che obbligava la Banca d'Italia a finanziare direttamente i disavanzi del bilancio pubblico) abbiano reso i tassi di interesse reali negativi (costituendo così un importante fattore di contenimento del rapporto debito/PIL), con l'ingresso nello SME (1979) e il cosiddetto "divorzio" tra la Banca d'Italia e il Tesoro (1981), i rendimenti reali sui titoli del debito accumulato sono diventati positivi e, superando i tassi di crescita reale del PIL, hanno provocato una vera e propria impennata del rapporto debito/PIL (che già alla fine degli anni Ottanta aveva superato il 100%). ; http://www.sieds.it/listing/RePEc/journl/2015LXIX_N3rieds_sieds.pdf
