The essay is focused on a specific component of the Italian solidarity toward the victims of Latin American military coups: women's association, as widely known, a plural world. Based on primary sources, it considers the time span included between the first episode of that kind – the Brazilian coup of 1964 – and Chile's 1973 one, an experience that produced a widespread and constant interaction between civil society and political institutions in our country. Through fund raising, counter information and multiple forms of denounce, several female associations in Italy have made their voice heard in support of the victims – women themselves – of political repression in Latin America during the 'long seventies'. It was a decade in which, along with women's enhanced participation in the public sphere, transnational activism began to denounce authoritarian regimes' human rights abuses. ; The essay is focused on a specific component of the Italian solidarity toward the victims of Latin American military coups: women's association, as widely known, a plural world. Abstract: This article aims to reconstruct the role played by a giant of American philanthropy-the Ford Foundation (FF) - in Argentina starting from a very critical moment for Inter-American relations during the Cold War: 1959. The research is based on an extensive amount of archive sources, including specific information about the grants given by the foundation to hard science professionals in order to escape the political emergency of the mid-Sixties. This contribution will be divided into three parts (i) a brief introduction to the main goals and strategy of the FF and strategy in Latin America in light of the imperatives of the bipolar conflict (ii) the role played in supporting social sciences and organizing resettlement programs (iii) the several contradictions in the process of welcoming these scholars in the U.S. academies.

; The aim of the article is to reflect upon the role played by the Ford Foundation, a giant of American philanthropy in Latin America. The time frame spreads itself over four decades: since the first contact established by Henry Ford in Brazil in 1927, before the very birth of the Foundation, until the opening of the first official branch in Latin America at the beginning of the 60s. The analysis of the archive sources allows us to focus on two main issues, which are worth special attention. On the one hand, the type of «modernizing» interest of the Foundation with respect to the American subcontinent, which did not consist of one simple transfer of American know-how orientated towards «development», but which had a more global objective of the exportation of the American way of life in a cultural, social and political sense. On the other hand, it highlights the broad context of the Cold War, in the sense of the multiple intersections that were showed by this modernizing interest with strictly political dynamics.

This article focuses on two groups of Southern Cone exiles' communities, Chileans and Argentineans, choosing to settle down in an atypical destination: the United States. After estimating some qualitative and quantitative findings, the article delves into the ways these communities settle down, remember their relationship with politics, maintain their connection with exiled fellow‐countrymen worldwide and perceive their national identity. By relying on an empirical, single‐case perspective, with no theoretical ambitions to extrapolate its conclusions to other contexts, this article examines the extent to which the conceptualisation of the exile and diaspora categories changes when applied to these two communities.

The essay provides with some insights around the topic of sexual violence to women involved in politics during general Augusto Pinochet military rule (1973-1990). Not only it is meant to describe the phenomenon in quantitative and qualitative terms, but also to delve into the realm of the social actors who, in several moments and contexts, identify rape as a specific type of torture, different from other human rights violations. This practice finds its roots well before the coup, in long duration processes and especially in domestic violence, but reaches its climax after 1973, extending into politics and blurring the boundaries between public and private sphere. Elaborating this theme today, either for individuals and in the collective debate, seems to be extremely difficult and controversial: maybe it constitutes one of the most thorny issues of the 'history of present time' in contemporary Chile.
