This book is an economic analysis of plagiarism in music, focusing on social efficiency and questions of inequity in the revenue of authors/artists. The organisation into central chapters on the traditional literary aspect of composition and the technocratic problem of "sampling" will help clarify disputes about social efficiency and equity. It will also be extremely helpful as an expository method where the text is used in courses on the music business. These issues have been explored to a great extent in other areas of musical content - notably piracy, copying and streaming. Therefore it is extremely helpful to exclude consumer use of musical content from the discussion to focus solely on the production side. This book also looks at the policy options in terms of the welfare economics of policy analysis.

This interdisciplinary Handbook combines both mainstream and heterodox economics to assess the nature, scope and importance of leisure activities. Surprisingly, the field of leisure economics is not, thus far, a particularly integrated or coherent one. In this Handbook a wide ranging body of international scholars get to grips with the core issues, taking in the traditional income/leisure choice model of textbook microeconomics and Becker's allocation of time model along the way. They expertly apply economics to some usually neglected topics, such as boredom and sleeping, work–life balance, dating, tourism, health and fitness, sport, video games, social networking, music festivals and sex. Contributions from further afield by Veblen, Sctivosky and Bourdieu also feature prominently.

This paper gives some exploratory results from estimating a consumer surplus
type equation which features a number of economic and demographic variables
as regressors. We calculate an income elasticity for the maximum surplus that
individuals would ever perceive themselves to be getting by being allowed to buy
at a set price. The results also show that those who attend the cinema are significantly less inclined to generate a surplus in flexible price events markets whilst young adults offer to pay quite a large amount more for their heavily desired entertainment. This suggests that part of the burden of a shift in ticket pricing methods may be borne by the parents of young adults.

Digital crime is an area where the application of the economics of crime is complex. In a nutshell, the essential economic problem of digi‐crime is the impact of technological progress making transactions costs of enforcement potentially too high, partly because of the low costs of copyright infringement due to technological advance, for there to be substantial amounts of deterrence from punishment.

During the period when capital punishment was regularly used in England and Wales, the risk of self‐execution from suicide, when suspected of murder, greatly dominated the risk of death at the hands of the state. Over the period 1900–1949, even with four years' data missing, there were 1,540 suicides by those suspected of murder. Using econometric analysis it is found that there is no significant relationship between self‐execution and state execution.

Sports broadcasting has been thrown into turmoil in recent years by technical change. This is likely to continue in the future with the emergence of digital broadcasts. There has been widespread concern over the regulation of broadcasts of sporting events. This paper reviews the grounds for regulation and concludes that there is little case for stronger government intervention.
