International audience ; The protests which have been ongoing in North-African countries since February 2011 have contributed towards giving visibility to that component of society often neglected by the dominant male model: women. Female bodies occupied not only the front covers of important magazines (Libération, n.9253, 12th-13th February 2011; Los Angeles Times, Saturday 12th February), but also a traditional male space: the public space. This media visibility of women has given new food for thought on gender issues as well as on issues concerning dominating relationships that the ever reigning patriarchal system continues to perpetrate on a global level.Assuming that in most of these societies such relationships largely determine people's roles and lives, can one speak of a specificity in the Mediterranean setting? The predominant image of the Mediterranean world is that of a closed context, refractory to transformation, anchored in sexist traditions and still a long way from effective equality and access to politics and positions of power. Just such a stereotype, legitimized by Anglo-Saxon traditional studies and research on the Mediterranean city (c.f. Minca 2004) and still commonly predominant, has been put into question by the active role played by women in social movements which have lately taken place in the whole of the Mediterranean basin1. The pictures of women engaged in protest and demonstration have gone around the world. However, what do the women of the Arab awakening and the Spanish indignados women2 have in common? The presence of their bodies on town squares and streets. Virtual space has also held a starring role in the protests. The role of technology and the network in social and political change has been vastly covered both in scientific contexts (e.g. Paradiso 2003, 2006) and in popular contexts; particular reference can be made to the Green Wave in Iran (Mouillard 2009; Hare and Darani 2010). Furthermore, with the 2011 protests, attention has been focused specifically on the relation ...

World Environmental Education Congress, Durban 2-6 juillet 2007 ; In this paper we present as case study the village of Hassilabiad in the Moroccan oasis region and the activities of the Association Hassilabiad (AHT), particularly those addressed to the involvement of the women. The Moroccan oasis region is subjected to new environmental problems. The Government often delegates their solution to the local administrations that have not the resources to solve them. Therefore the role of the local associations is growing. The Association AHT is facing the problems related to desertification, and also the new emergencies caused by wastes and waste waters, involving a fundamental social actor: the women. Because of their daily activities, women are strongly related to the environment and are those who are directly affected by and have to manage the environmental problems.

International audience ; The Moroccan oasis region is facing new environmental problems. The Government often delegates their solution to the local administrations that do not have the resources to solve them. Therefore the role of the local associations is growing but sometimes the lack of training of their members in the field of environmental issues and EE, and the absence of the public administration cannot solve the problems but partially. We present, as case study, the activities of the Association Hassilabiad pour l´environnement, le développement et la coopération (AHT).

Integrated Coastal Zone Management is widely recognised as a set of principles, approaches and tools for the sustainable development of coastal zones. However, while its importance as a theoretical framework for approaching the complexity of coastal governance is not opinable, the problem of translating ICZM principles into every-day management practice still represents a basic point to deal with. This paper aims at clarifying the most important elements that hinder ICZM adoption and implementation. To this purpose, it critically evaluates the results of the EU FP7 Project PEGASO (People for Ecosystem-based Governance in Assessing Sustainable development of Ocean and coast). The project considered ICZM efforts and initiatives in 10 case studies, 7 in the Mediterranean Sea and 3 in the Black Sea. The study confirms that dealing with the multi-scale nature of coastal governance, the poor coordination of policies and administrative fragmentation, the dictatorship of sectoral approaches, the difficulty to promote integration, both thematic and geographic, the complex relationship between voluntary agreements and statutory frameworks, the difficult relationship between science and decision making, and the problem of the sustainability over time of ICZM initiatives and efforts still represent the main factors that hamper a wider adoption of ICZM in the considered cases.
International audience ; This communication aims to analyse the impact of the tourist sector in the Oasis Region in Morocco and the territorial re-organisation, also in relation to the social, economic and environmental changes that are consequently produced. The concept of poverty is here not limited to the economic situation but is extended to the potential causes of vulnerability of the poor social groups, which include, particularly, the quality of the environment and the natural resources constituting the basis of their livelihoods. This rural region, traditionally considered as a periphery if compared to the urban centres, is now valued by the government of Morocco as a new centrality for the national tourism development that could play an important role in the framework of the tourism development programme launched in January 2001 «to reach 10 millions tourists by the year 2010».The communication will then consider the new territorial dynamics as well as the environmental risks associated to the growing tourist flows. In particular, we will emphasize the role played by the civil society associations in the control and management of environmental impacts and in the promotion of a pro-active and critical attitude, capable to face a complexity of environmental and social issues. We will then focus on the rural area of Hassilabiad, and on a particular social group whose role is fundamental for the success of any development project aiming at reducing poverty: the village association.
