"The Overseas Museums of China is the first book to analyse the recent upsurge in these types of museums. Examining heritage-making beyond the conventional framework of the nation-state, the book provides a much-needed, critical examination of China's engagement with its diasporic communities. Drawing on fieldwork in more than ten museums, as well as interviews with museum practitioners and archival study, Wang offers a timely analysis of the complex ways in which Chinese diasporas are represented in the museum space of China, the ancestral homeland. Arguing that diasporic heritage is highly ambiguous and introducing a diasporic perspective to the study of cultural heritage, this book opens up a new avenue of inquiry into the study and management of cultural heritage in China and beyond. Most importantly, perhaps, Wang sheds new light on the dynamic between China and Chinese diasporas through the lens of the museum. This paper examines the politics and poetics of identity construction and articulation among guiqiao (Returned Overseas Chinese) through a case study of a postage stamp exhibition put up jointly by an ordinary guiqiao and an official huaqiao (Overseas Chinese) museum in Quanzhou, China. Two conflicting meaning systems are identified in this exhibition. On the surface and mainly through words, it promulgates a highly clichéd China-centred discourse of huaqiao as patriotic subjects, legitimated by the authority of an official museum. Simultaneously, it articulates implicitly a "trans-local diasporic subjectivity" conveyed by the imagery of stamps and constituted by constant interactions between the materiality of stamps and the bodily experience of stamp collectors beyond the museum. This study contributes to the study of guiqiao, and of Chinese diaspora in general, in two ways. First, it complicates the conventional understanding of guiqiao identity by pinpointing contested negotiations between the state from above and guiqiao from below, involving simultaneously conflicts and compromises. Secondly, it brings to light the important role of body, affect and materiality in the construction and articulation of guiqiao identities, paving the way for integrating museum and migration studies with the potential to re-conceptualize transnational mobilities in the Chinese context and beyond.

The past decades have witnessed a burgeoning literature on guiqiao (Returned Overseas Chinese) in the People's Republic of China. These works have advanced and broadened research in this field; however, there is a persistent male bias that tends to ignore the gendered nature of migration processes or simplistically frame the return migration of women through a monolithic masculine/patriotic lens. To fill this gap, this paper looks at gendered motivations behind the 'return' of Chinese women from Indonesia in the 1950s. Seeing gender as 'a central organizing principle in migration flows and in the organization of migrants lives' ( Lutz 2010 : 1651) and drawing upon interviews and archival studies, it suggests that the 'return' of Chinese women to Maoist China was closely associated with postcolonial feminist imagination, or more specifically, a longing for 'emancipated womanhood,' in a transnational context mediated by citizenship and ethnicity. In addition, the experiences of female guiqiao as voluntary migrants and successful careerists challenge the (mis)conception of Chinese women migrants as trailing dependents, adding a counter narrative to the overarching androcentric discourse about Chinese migration from a historical perspective.

Abstract
The existing research on Tan Kah Kee's museum practices focuses mainly on how he developed museums as an educational institute to modernize China. This paper re-examines his contributions to China's museum development from a longitudinal perspective and by adopting a transnational view. By contextualizing Tan's museum exercises in his life experience as a Chinese migrant in British Malaya and through analyzing the architecture design, collection and audiences of his museums, it conceptualizes the museums built by Tan as "diaspora museum," defined as a heritage-making space constructed through the interactions between Chinese diasporas and the Chinese homeland, produced by and producing a de-territorialized vision of nation and identity. In addition, based on this case study it argues that overseas Chinese opened up an alternative route to transmitting museology to China. Instead of transferring museum directly from Western countries, they acquired a knowledge of museum through encounters with mediated Western modernity in colonial Southeast Asia and then transmitted it (indirectly) to China. Tan's museum endeavors laid the foundation of a "diasporic heritage-building" tradition that has had a long-lasting impact on museum development in China today and among the overseas Chinese communities.
