The purpose of the present study effected in 2007 was to explore the approaches to establishing cooperation between lead teachers and parents of third- and ninth-grade primary school students, and the quality of that cooperation. The study also sought to find differences and similarities in parent and teacher expectations within different areas of their cooperation. Data were obtained from a sample of 55 randomly selected primary schools from which 141 lead teachers of third and ninth grades and 810 parents of the students from those grades were included in the study. The study focused on the following areas of cooperation: school to home communications, parent influence on school decisions, and parent involvement in different school activities. The research indicated that the third- and ninth- grade lead teachers were mostly in agreement about the importance of parent involvement and as such represented a fairly homogenous group. The third-grade lead teachers were more open about actual involvement of parents in instruction than their ninth-grade colleagues who were more cautious and restrained. In contrast to the lead teachers that represented a relatively narrow professional group, parents' views were much more dispersed. Parent education was the best predictor of their readiness to get involved in the life and work of their children's school. This was especially the case with mothers who took part in formal school conferences more often than fathers. Whether the area in which the families lived was urban or suburban did not make any difference.

In the post‐affluence phase of socio‐economic development, innovation may be equally crucial, if it can be more usual and holistic, hence socially responsible, including youngsters. Many countries are, like Slovenia, lagging behind most developed economies in innovation and economic results. In order to alleviate this problem, authors developed a model for the sustainable promotion of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship among primary school students. Deliberately, no complex strategy for the revision of the curriculum is proposed. Such a revision, though necessary, is questionable now. Authors' approach is almost minimalist and, thus, feasible in the current environment. Here three forms of the proposed educational activities are presented. Each of the three sets of activities has work guidelines founded on authors' concept. The introduction of these guidelines will help improve the creative, innovative and entrepreneurial competencies of youngsters. Although the proposal envisions no immediate financial effects, it presents an important and socially responsible long‐term investment. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The aim of this article is to present practices for regulating elementary and secondary education from an international perspective. It presents processes needed to introduce a system of external evaluation and takes account of the danger that if not carefully thought out, external evaluation can adhere to procedure to too great an extent, to the detriment of actual improvements in education. An external evaluation model that could be implemented in the Slovenian education system is then proposed. The proposed model stresses schools' accountability to the public, the dissemination of effective practices, and the delivery of relevant information to those in charge of national school policy. The model upgrades existing mechanisms for assessing and maintaining quality and links them with a legislation proposal to form a coherent whole.

In this research, we assessed the impact of the socio-economic status (average net wages, the registered unemployment rate), education structure and demographic risk (the age dependency ratio) of residents of different Slovenian municipalities on scores on the nationwide, external assessment of knowledge given to pupils in grade 9 of primary school. The analysis was conducted using data for 201 Slovenian municipalities where the National Assessment of Knowledge (NAK) was given to 9th-grade primary school pupils in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. This test assesses learners' knowledge of the Slovene language and mathematics. The data were used to calculate basic descriptive statistics, as well as coefficients, correlations and validated regression models. The findings show that registered unemployment rate, average educational attainment and the age dependency ratio influence achievements in mathematics. The findings for the Slovene portion of the National Assessment of Knowledge are not as expressive, but do indicate that the registered unemployment rate and age dependency ratio have an impact.
