The war that the Spanish maintained against Napoleon's army from 1808 until 1814 had not only political but also cultural effect. In 1808, literature becomes a political weapon against the French propaganda and supports the cause of Ferdinand VII and the Catholic religion, but also the need for everyone to contribute to this war and the subversion of the information system –before controlled by the crown– brought about an increase in the number of people who occasionally becomes the protagonists of this «guerra de pluma». In regards to women, this paper attempts to illustrate with the study of three writers the way in which women's literature was affected. Frasquita Larrea begins publishing in 1808, hidden under a pseudonym, a literature of combat. Then, the control of the press and the publishing difficulties did not help the public diffusion of his writing. M a Manuela López de Ulloa will write continuously between 1810 and 1815, with no other purpose than to serve the political-religious cause and she probably stopped writing when the war situation finished. Vicenta Maturana wrote from 1814, when the return to the throne of Ferdinand VII was next, which allowed her to cultivate a literary tradition that restored the eighteenth century. Anyway, absolutist repression doesn't allow literature to regain its level until the king's death and, more specifically, until the late thirties where is true cultural progress and flourishing of the press. In practice, it will be another generation of women writers, without exception, who will be able to benefit from these changes. ; The war that the Spanish maintained against Napoleon's army from 1808 until 1814 had not only political but also cultural effect. Which were the mechanisms by which certain groups were positioned at the margins of national narratives during the nineteenth century, either via their exclusion from these narratives of through their incorporation into them as 'others'? By engaging with shifting ideas of exclusion and difference, the authors in this book reflect upon the paradoxical centrality of the subaltern at a time when literature was deployed as a tool for nation building. The lasting presence of the Jewish and Moorish legacy, the portrayal of gypsy characters, or the changing notions of femininity in public discourse exemplify the ways in which images of marginal 'types' played a central role in the configuration of the very idea of Spanishness.
