The aim of this article is to broaden our knowledge of the metrological system of the Morisco period in the kingdom of Granada and, more specifically, in the rural area of the Alpujarra. The sources used in the analysis are two inventories of ecclesiastical goods from Islamic origin, drawn up in 1527 and 1530, four decades after the culmination of the Christian conquest of al-Andalus. The article explores the agrarian units of measurement used by the Morisco community of the Alpujarra in their daily lives (measures of surface area and length, weight or mass, volume or capacity, and of water used for irrigation). As far as possible, equivalences are presented for the units discussed. Attempts are made to establish whether these measures were inherited from the Andalusi period or whether, on the contrary, they were the result of the implementation of Castilian legislation on the matter. The data gathered have revealed the existence of a hybrid measurement system, which shows that the ordinances to modify the system of weights and measures of the Muslims and to seek a correspondence with the Castilian system had little effect in the Alpujarra, where, in many cases, the Islamic system of measurement continued in use. Copyright © 2012. www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781409447597) ; [EN] In order to understand the image that Muslims in the Middle Ages formed of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, this paper reviews a series of Arabic narrative texts which mention it and which provide insight into its religious, political and military implications from the perspective of Muslim authors. This is one aspect of the cult of St James which has received little attention until recently1 and which constitutes an interesting facet in contrast to its more familiar image in Christian circles. This work gathers together the threads of information in medieval Arabic sources that relate to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela, as well as to the routes trodden by the travellers on their Jacobean pilgrimage, just as they are set down in the work of a twelfth-century Muslim author. Subsequently, it discusses the religious, political and military repercussions which arose from the cult of St James in the Islamic world, including a special mention of the way in which the city of Santiago and its church were sacked towards the end of the tenth century by the might of al-Andalus. ; [ES] A fin de conocer la imagen que los musulmanes del medievo se habían forjado de la peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela, en este trabajo reviso una serie de textos árabes de tipo narrativo que hacen referencia a este fenómeno y que permiten entrever las implicaciones religiosas, políticas y militares derivadas de él, según la perspectiva adoptada a este respecto por los autores musulmanes. Es este un aspecto del culto jacobeo al que no se ha prestado especial consideración hasta fechas recientes y que constituye una faceta interesante como contrapunto a la imagen más conocida que del mismo se tenía en el ámbito cristiano. En este trabajo se traen a colación las noticias contenidas en las fuentes árabes medievales en relación con el santuario compostelano, así como los itinerarios que seguían los viajeros en su peregrinación jacobea, tal y como aparecen consignados en la obra de un autor musulmán del siglo XII. Posteriormente, se abordan las repercusiones de índole religiosa, política y militar derivadas del culto jacobeo en el ámbito islámico, incluyendo una mención especial al saqueo al que fueron sometidos la ciudad de Santiago y su templo por la autoridad andalusí a finales del siglo X. ; Peer reviewed

Peer reviewed ; [EN] The reason for setting up a waqf is to perpetuate the pious work to which it is dedicated. Perpetuity not only entails the immutability of its founder's stipulations, but is also implicitly accompanied by the conditions of immobility, inalienability, intangibility and imprescriptibility of the objects donated. As a general rule, the affected goods become immobilized, since they cannot be alienated, this being one of the limitations which characterise the foundation. In this regard, they cannot be sold, inherited, bequeathed or donated. However, although one can conceive, in juridical terms, of an immobilised good, its material immobility is unlikely due to the changing conditions of the circumstances surrounding it. Legal sources make evident that, in the immense majority of cases, the inalienable and intangible nature of these goods to a great extent conditions the legal consultations that arise in relation to this type of property. This aspect explains the fact that, with relative frequency, cases are dealt with involving a violation of the characteristics of inalienability, intangibility and immobility inherent in these goods. In this connection, the main aim of this article consists in determining the circumstances in which Andalusi jurists authorise the modification of the legal rules that govern the institution of waqf and, consequently, the legal criteria that were employed in order to justify the alienation of goods so established. Likewise, cases will be examined in which this act is deemed to be unlawful in the absence of justifiable causes. From this point of view, legal sources can point to the way in which legal doctrine in al-Andalus adapted to the needs of society. [EN] By turning to different kinds of Arabic narrative sources one can obtain a more specific panoramic view of diverse aspects associated with charity in al-Andalus, with particular reference to most of the Umayyad period (IX-XI centuries). The aim of this presentation is to deal with the forms characteristic of charitable practices in al-Andalus, as well as the different functions that were performed by charity. It is widely known that the most disadvantaged members of society did not always have to cope with their problems alone in the face of indifference. Charity could take on a markedly institutional flavour, when the political authorities took responsibility for it. Nevertheless, the rest of the population did not remain impassive to the sufferings of their peers. One must, therefore, trace the way in which charity affected the dynamics of the Andalusi population. ; [ES] Mediante el recurso a distintos tipos de fuentes narrativas árabes se puede obtener una visión panorámica algo más que general de diversos aspectos referidos a la caridad en al-Andalus, con especial referencia a la mayor parte del período omeya (siglos IX-XI). En esta presentación se pretende abordar qué formas adoptaron las prácticas caritativas en al-Andalus y cuáles fueron las distintas funciones desempeñadas por la caridad. Es bien sabido que los miembros más desfavorecidos de la sociedad no siempre afrontaban sus problemas en medio de la indiferencia ajena. La caridad podía presentar un marcado carácter institucional, cuando era asumida por la autoridad política. Pero el resto de la población tampoco se mantuvo impasible ante las miserias del prójimo. La producción historiográfica sobre Galicia en la Edad Media ha insistido siempre en ignorar la información contenida en los textos árabes. Se trataba, pues, de un tema prácticamente inexplorado, casi desconocido, pero de interés estimable para el avance del conocimiento histórico y, en particular, para la promoción de los estudios transversales, tan importantes en el panorama científico actual. Esta obra responde a la necesidad de llenar ese vacío historiográfico. En este sentido, constituye una reflexión sobre la concepción y la representación del territorio y de los habitantes del noroeste de la Península Ibérica entre los siglos VIII-XV a través del análisis de las fuentes árabes medievales, especialmente obras históricas y geográficas. En este libro se traza un bosquejo inédito de carácter geográfico, etnográfico e histórico de Galicia -entendida ésta en un sentido amplio-, según la perspectiva que de ella tenían los autores árabo-musulmanes. Desde este punto de vista, este estudio constituye el primer trabajo existente a este respecto en el panorama bibliográfico actual. Además, no sólo contribuye al estudio de las historias locales, sino también al conocimiento de una de las fronteras andalusíes menos conocidas. Un análisis exhaustivo de los distintos aspectos temáticos que comprende esta cuestión ha permitido formarnos una idea del concepto que los autores árabes tenían de Galicia y los gallegos, así como de la trayectoria evolutiva del mismo. Desde el punto de vista geográfico, se ha obtenido información relativa a la extensión territorial que las fuentes árabes atribuyen a Galicia y a la descripción que de ella hacen, incluyendo un cuadro pictórico de sus principales ciudades y una relación de sus accidentes geográficos. No menos interesante ha resultado examinar la imagen de los gallegos reflejada en los textos árabes, especialmente ciertos aspectos relativos a rasgos físicos y morales, así como a hábitos y costumbres. Más numerosos son los datos históricos relativos a Galicia. Por una parte, el estudio de esta cuestión ha arrojado luz en relación con la presencia árabe y beréber en territorio gallego. Por otra parte, este trabajo ha permitido conocer mejor los periodos cronológicos en que se registra una mayor actividad bélica entre cristianos y musulmanes en el noroeste peninsular. Al margen de la cuestión militar, este estudio refleja en qué términos se desarrollaban las relaciones diplomáticas entre gallegos y musulmanes en la Península Ibérica. ; Peer reviewed
