MAKING IT TO THE TOP: SPECIFIC LEADERSHIP SKILLS – A COMPARISON OF MALE AND FEMALE PERCEPTIONS OF SKILLS NEEDED BY WOMEN AND MEN MANAGERS
In: Women in management review, Band 8, Heft 2
ISSN: 1758-7182
Discusses general skills clusters identified by other researchers
as necessary for leadership success. Reports a US study by questionnaire
survey on the specific skills viewed by male and female managers as
essential for top management posts. Reveals a great deal of agreement,
but women as well as men harbour stereotypes of women as being less able
to handle their emotions under stress, less career‐committed and not
such good team‐players.
An Empirical Examination of Inter-Ethnic Stereotypes: Comparing Asian American and African American Employees
In: Public personnel management, Band 32, Heft 2, S. 251-266
ISSN: 1945-7421
This paper examines stereotypes that individuals hold about Asian-American and African-American men and women. To explore the impact of stereotyping on jobs and promotions, our study is placed in the context of work situations and employment roles. Findings in a diverse student population of 127 undergraduate students at a West Coast university showed that of the four groups, African-American men were viewed most negatively. Specifically, they were seen as less competent and less polite than employees in any of the other three groups, and less serious about work than African-American women and Asian-American men. Results are discussed with regard to stereotype intervention and communications training necessary to coalesce efforts of diverse individuals.
