Emerging economies have rebounded relatively quickly from the 2008 global financial crisis, and despite various challenges they face resulting from the European sovereign debt crisis, they face bright economic futures. While many observers have focused on China and India, Brazil is an emerging economy that has enjoyed increasing visibility. This Article examines Brazil's evolution into an emerging economy, or given the market-based nature of the term, an emerging market economy (EME). The economic, social, political, and legal reforms that have contributed to Brazil's status as an EME have bolstered the power and legitimacy of its voice in international affairs, giving the country an important role in articulating a new global order as envisioned by former president Lula da Silva. However, its voice will resonate only to the extent it continues to address a number of challenges ranging from economic policy to corruption.

; Mexico has witnessed some social movements initiated in social networks, which foster connections that enable social capital, the latter being closely related to political participation. This citizen power linked to democracy can have repercussions on institutions and economic development. In this context, this research has as its objective to determine the relationship of the social capital of Facebook users with their political participation. This investigation uses a quantitative approach through a survey applied to 389 Facebook users in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa, as it is one of the Mexican cities with the highest percentage of internet users in Mexico in order to explain the phenomenon supported in a statistical analysis of correlations and linear regressions from data captured in Likert scales. The findings show that social capital in its online bonding dimension, as well as its online bridging and traditional dimensions through political participation online of Facebook users, significantly influence their traditional political participation, in other words, social capital of Facebook users affects political participation offline. It is concluded that social media social capital represents an opportunity to increase political participation, online and offline, and therefore pressure the authorities to meet the needs of their population.

In recent decades, electronic media have become part of daily life, and the arrival of online social networks has given its members the possibility of relating and forming digital communities that make the formation of social capital possible. An abundant reserve of social capital assumes the production of a dense civil society that is closely related to political participation. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find the influence of Facebook uses on online political participation. The methodology used in this research is quantitative, which sought to measure, through a survey with Likert scale items, the incidence between the variables: the intensity of use of Facebook, online social capital, and online political participation. The object of study is the population of Culiacán, Sinaloa, México, due to its high percentage of internet users in the country and its level of voter turnout. As a result, online political participation showed a relationship with the rest of the variables, even on linear regressions it is shown that it is influenced by the use of Facebook. If social networking sites such as Facebook influence online political participation, by socializing information that may contain public issues between contacts, they represent an opportunity to stimulate political participation in its physical form and thus influence democratic processes.
