Vector processing is a widely used technique to improve performance and energy efficiency in modern processors. Most of them rely on predication to support divergence control. However, performance and energy consumption in predicated instructions are usually independent on the number of true values in a mask. This means that the efficiency of the system becomes sub-optimal as vector length increases. In this work we propose the Optimized Predication Execution (OPE) technique. OPE delays the execution of sparse masked vector instructions sharing the same PC, extracts their active elements and creates a new dense instruction with a higher mask density. After executing such dense instruction, results are restored to the original sparse instructions. Cache Coherent NUMA (ccNUMA) architectures are a widespread paradigm due to the benefits they provide for scaling core count and memory capacity. Also, the flat memory address space they offer considerably improves programmability. However, ccNUMA architectures require sophisticated and expensive cache coherence protocols to enforce correctness during parallel executions, which trigger a significant amount of on- and off-chip traffic in the system. This paper analyses how coherence traffic may be best constrained in a large, real ccNUMA platform comprising 288 cores through the use of a joint hardware/software approach. For several benchmarks, we study coherence traffic in detail under the influence of an added hierarchical cache layer in the directory protocol combined with runtime managed NUMA-aware scheduling and data allocation techniques to make most efficient use of the added hardware. In the last few years, the traditional ways to keep the increase of hardware performance at the rate predicted by Moore's Law have vanished. When uni-cores were the norm, hardware design was decoupled from the software stack thanks to a well defined Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). This simple interface allowed developing applications without worrying too much about the underlying hardware, while hardware designers were able to aggressively exploit instruction-level parallelism (ILP) in superscalar processors. With the irruption of multi-cores and parallel applications, this simple interface started to leak. As a consequence, the role of decoupling again applications from the hardware was moved to the runtime system. Efficiently using the underlying hardware from this runtime without exposing its complexities to the application has been the target of very active and prolific research in the last years. Current multi-cores are designed as simple symmetric multiprocessors (SMP) on a chip. However, we believe that this is not enough to overcome all the problems that multi-cores already have to face. It is our position that the runtime has to drive the design of future multi-cores to overcome the restrictions in terms of power, memory, programmability and resilience that multi-cores have. Since the early 70s, simulation infrastructures have been a keystone in computer architecture research, providing a fast and reliable way to prototype and evaluate ideas for future computing systems. There are different types of simulators, from most detailed (cycle-accurate) to time-based/functional and analytical modeling. Increasing accuracy translates into several orders of magnitude in terms of simulation speed. Yet, a question remains open: are the results derived from the simulation infrastructure representative of a real machine? Validation of these infrastructures is complex and costly, usually performed upon release. However, most simulators do not provide the appropriate means to verify or validate new architectural models. In this paper, we introduce a semi-automatic validation framework based on real-hardware performance counter information. The framework provides two levels of abstraction: (a) a high level definition of the processor behavior (Top-Down model) and (b) detailed per-structure and per-pipeline-stage usage breakdown to pinpoint simulator issues. All the supercomputers in the world exploit data-level parallelism (DLP), for example by using single instructions to operate over several data elements. Improving vector processing is therefore key for exascale computing. Control flow divergence is one of the main vector performance limiting factors. Most modern vector instruction sets rely on predication to support divergence control. Nevertheless, the performance and energy consumption in predicated codes is usually insensitive to the number of active elements. Since the trend is that vector register size doubles every four years, the energy efficiency of exascale systems will become sub-optimal. This paper proposes the Compiler-Assisted Compaction/Restoration (CACR) technique. The baseline CR delays predicated SIMD instructions with inactive elements and compacts active elements with instances of the same instruction from later loop iterations to form and execute an equivalent dense vector instruction. The compiler assisted CR analyzes the code looking for key information required to configure CR. Then, it passes this information to the processor via new instructions. Our evaluation shows that CACR improves performance by up to 29\% and reduces dynamic energy consumption by up to 24.2\% on average. In this work, we show how parallel applications can be implemented efficiently using task parallelism. We also evaluate the benefits of such parallel paradigm with respect to other approaches. We use the PARSEC benchmark suite as our test bed, which includes applications representative of a wide range of domains from HPC to desktop and server applications. We adopt different parallelization techniques, tailored to the needs of each application, to fully exploit the task-based model. Our evaluation shows that task parallelism achieves better performance than thread-based parallelization models, such as Pthreads. Our experimental results show that we can obtain scalability improvements up to 42% on a 16-core system and code size reductions up to 81%.
