Foreign policy is the face a nation wears to the world. In this synthetic way, Arthur M Schlesinger Jr, emphasizes the crucial importance of the projection that a state provides of itself to the world. In different periods of history, the face with which America introduced itself on the international stage exhibited different expressions. Indeed, US foreign policy developed on the ground of the contraposition between two important dichotomies: the one between isolationism and interventionism, and the other between unilateralism and multilateralism. In both the Democratic and the Republican Parties, these dichotomies reflect the different positions that can be found within all American administrations. Hence, with the passing of time, many scholars have tried to create typologies to interpret the guidelines of American foreign policy. Here, Castellin examines the theme of power in his portrait of Reinhold Niebuhr and his evaluation of the American role in history in the aesthetic terms of an ironic discrepancy between virtue and realism. For all of its ideals, the West is not a suicide pact and has to be prepared to use force to defend itself. The question from the 1930s may become germane again: whether democracies have the will to fight. Adapted from the source document.
