The relationship between public health practice and the fulfilment of the right to health is often assumed to be synergistic. With the goal of understanding how exactly this relationship happens, I studied the everyday practice of epidemiology in Guatemala, seeking to understand how it shapes and is shaped by the notion of health as a human right. Here I present findings from my ethnographic investigation of the Guatemalan Centro Nacional de Epidemiología (National Epidemiology Center), created in 2004 with the explicit mission of contributing to fulfilling the right to health for the inhabitants of Guatemala. While the relationship between epidemiological practice and the right to health is influenced by the specific configuration of local and transnational flows (bureaucratic, economic, ideological, political, scientific, social, and symbolic), epidemiologists also play an important mediating role. There are four intermediate social mechanisms that shape the relevance of epidemiological practice to fulfilling the right to health in Guatemala. Given how the country's economic and social inequalities translate into enormous health inequities, an epidemiological practice committed to the right to health should aspire to transform, rather than reproduce, the social hierarchies underlying such inequalities. The mechanisms I identified shape how epidemiological practice contributes to the reproduction or transformation of such hierarchies. These mechanisms shape what I call 'neocolonial epidemiology', and include: institutional chaos, disciplinary conformism, global health international relations, and social relations at the national level.

Study (Moten & Harney, 2013) and disidentification (Muñoz, 1999), are terms that could be understood as conditions for divergent un-individuated production. These strategies are productive in the way they (de)generate, constructive from their insistent refusal of the instituted. By identifying connections between these strategies, the text points at their transformative potential. Could these performative processes displace or decentralize dominant modes of production?Setting the tone and character of the writing, the introduction defines form and content as non-hierarchical parties that complement one another. Governmental precarity (Lorey, 2015) is described as a precarious object of governance. If life is entangled within the realms of the social and institutional, it could be interesting to speculate on collective modes of production. The text sets forth A friend to the idea (Sully, 2016) and Who moves and who doesn't? (Ngamcharoen, 2018) as positions within the realm of institutional critical art. Within an academic context, these performances reflect on the conditions of production through transversal critique.

En este artículo se presenta un análisis sobre el impacto del cambio agrario en la dinámica del poblamiento regional en Chile en los últimos 35 años. Las transformaciones en la estructura agraria han generado importantes cambios en la configuración espacial de las relaciones campo-ciudad, en particular a partir del nuevo carácter de la migración rural-urbana en contextos regionales. Si hasta los años sesenta la migración del campo a la ciudad estuvo asociada a una movilidad ocupacional –de empleos agrícolas a empleos urbanos–, a partir de los setenta, en cambio, esta relación prácticamente desaparece presentándose una virtual disociación entre la movilidad territorial de la población y la movilidad ocupacional de la fuerza de trabajo. Esta disociación constituye un componente central en la actual configuración regional de las relaciones campo-ciudad.

La demografía de la desigualdad no solo refiere a una perspectiva para el entendimiento de la desigualdad social, sino que también, y fundamentalmente, constituye una crítica a la demografía tradicional sobre la que se puede fundar un nuevo discurso demográfico. Resulta así una propuesta tanto de análisis empírico como de crítica teórica, que busca pasar de la mera medición de los distintos modos de desigualdad a un modelo capaz de comprender su origen, sus consecuencias y sus manifestaciones desde la perspectiva de la demografía. El envejecimiento de la población ha suscitado un creciente interés, especialmente la estimación de sus dimensiones cuantitativas, sus impactos sociales y las cargas económicas que de él derivan. Sin embargo, menor atención han recibido los desafíos conceptuales y metodológicos que este cambio demográfico plantea, especialmente en el marco de las transformaciones estructurales que caracterizan a las sociedades contemporáneas. En este sentido, en este artículo se presenta una revisión conceptual del discurso demográfico en la sociedad moderna. La tesis sustenta que el envejecimiento inaugura un nuevo régimen demográfico, en el cual el problema de la población habrá de trasladarse de la preocupación por la dinámica del crecimiento a la cuestión de la estructuración social de las diferencias y desigualdades demográficas.

Asumida únicamente como la diferencia entre ricos y pobres es decir, un problema de distribución de ingresos , la desigualdad parecería ser tan sólo una consecuencia del sistema económico. Sin embargo, su comportamiento reproductivo y su presencia en todos los ámbitos la convierten, más que en consecuencia, en una pieza estructurante del sistema: baste mencionar la lucha de clases, el patriarcado y el racismo, las desigualdades geopolíticas o las confrontaciones intergeneracionales, para observar los diferentes modos en que se constituye.El presente libro ofrece una propuesta teórica y política de emancipación social, vista como una oportunidad para construir condiciones de igualdad en contextos de libertad, no sólo por fundamentos éticos sino esencialmente políticos. Para lograrlo, los autores confrontan la desigualdad en dos vías: como un fenómeno social (y, por tanto, históricamente situado y estructurado) y mediante la reflexión crítica de los conceptos, categorías, indicadores y marcos de su entendimiento.No se trata tanto de un estudio de la desigualdad en sí misma, cuanto de una reflexión crítica de las formas en que se ha pensado conceptual y políticamente en diversos momentos, con especial referencia al modo en que se ha concebido en la sociedad moderna y capitalista.
