This monograph initially offers a systematic treatment of the theory and methodology of alternative notions of income polarization and related issues. It then goes on to analyze social polarization, ordinal polarization, and the relations between inequality polarization, fractionalization and likelihood of conflicts. Axiomatic approaches to the measurement of polarization from different perspectives are analyzed rigorously. In order to understand the difference between inequality and polarization, a discussion on income inequality is also included.

The subject of this book is income distribution based social index numbers. These index numbers quantify different aspects of income distribution data. The topics covered are: inequality, economic distance, relative de- privation, poverty, tax progressivity, horizontal inequity and mobility. The main purpose of the book is to present the significant results on welfare theoretic ap- proaches to income distribution based measurement problems. Discussions of descriptive approaches, which do not make use of a concept of social welfare, are also included. Thus the book gives an overall view of the recent developments in this subject. The technical terms and mathematical operations employed to discuss the results are explained in nontechnical terms, and intuitive explanation of the mathematical results are given. Numerical illustrations of some of the results are provided using income distribution data

The variance, which has many advantages as a measure of inequality, is a quadratic form in incomes. In this paper we develop a characterization of the variance by showing that among all quadratic forms in incomes, it is the only one that satisfies absolute inequality invariance, symmetry, the principle of transfers and the principle of population. A numerical illustration of several inequality indices, including the variance, is also presented in the paper.

A growth vector is often considered as pro-poor if it generates a reductionin poverty. A second approach to pro-poorness states that growth shouldbe higher for the poor than for the non-poor. In this article, we develop ananalytical approach by considering a compromise between these two notionsof pro-poorness.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we strengthen Cowell and Flachaire's observation regarding the failure to satisfy Cowell's "monotonicity in distance" postulate by several well‐known inequality indices. We also identify a general analytical reason for this failure to arise.
