This doctoral research aims to advance critical understanding of the ways in which the developing and expanding field of sound-based art engages with the particularities of place and environment. Through a theoretical contextualisation of both my own sound-based work and installations and the work of other practitioners, I investigate the ways in which sitespecific sonic art is capable of interrogating established notions of place and of developing new knowledge about it. One of the objectives of both contextualisation and investigation is to contribute critically and originally to a politics of location, place and environment. Although these areas are in a constant state of flux, they are now made more vulnerable by the increasing pressures of globalisation and the acceleration of technological and economic development. Today sonic art tends to be discussed on the basis of two paradigms, each of which was formulated in relation to specific aesthetic and philosophical traditions: the visual arts and, more particularly, art-critical perspectives on conceptualism; and the phenomenology of audition. I argue that these approaches leave much ground uncovered. Central to my investigation is thus an exploration of the perceptual mechanisms by which an audience engages with sound-based work. For this I draw on the ecological theory of perception to propose a new methodology. Within ecological models of perception an individual can be regarded as a 'perceptual system': a mobile organism that seeks information from a coherent environment. In my thesis I relate this concept to notions of the spatial address of sound installations in order to explore (a) how the human perceptual apparatus relates to the technology of sound diffusion and (b) how this impacts on individuals' engagement with sound-based work and on their ability to experience such work as complex sonic 'environments'. The focus on installations also opens up questions of 'site-specificity', a term that enables me to examine the ways in which recent sonic art practice has engaged with the particularities and politics of place. This review leads me to the questions this thesis seeks to address: can sound-based work promote critical engagement with the historical specificity, the knowledge and the politics of place? Can the ecological theory of perception aid the understanding of how the listener engages with sound installations? In proposing answers to these questions, my thesis intends to formulate and advance a coherent analytical framework that may lead us to a more systematic grasp of the ways in which individuals, through the relatively new category and practice of sonic art, engage aesthetically with space and environment.

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is growing worldwide with increasing market pull from consumers and market push from manufacturers of vehicles and charging equipment, as well as others in the supply chain. Governments have begun developing policies to support EV uptake and local governments, in particular, are examining what role they should play. In Australia, a large country with low population density, EV uptake has been slower in comparison to other similar economies. This paper discusses the status of EV charging infrastructure deployment in Australia with regards to local governments, by considering the extent to which they are relied upon for the deployment of such technology and what motivates them to act. It also covers the work undertaken by the authors with one local government in developing an EV charging infrastructure business model that will help the local community adopt and benefit from EVs. An applied use of the business canvas methodology adapted to suit local government interests is presented to assess the risks and benefits that different business models offer. The paper offers insights into the strategic and pragmatic responsibilities local governments balance in seeking to expand the EV charging infrastructure in their jurisdiction.

WOS: 000387793800002 ; PubMed ID: 27804925 ; A multiple energy imaging system that can extract multiple endogenous or induced contrast materials as well as water and bone images would be ideal for imaging of biological subjects. The continuous spectrum available from synchrotron light facilities provides a nearly perfect source for multiple energy x-ray imaging. A novel multiple energy x-ray imaging system, which prepares a horizontally focused polychromatic x-ray beam, has been developed at the BioMedical Imaging and Therapy bend magnet beamline at the Canadian Light Source. The imaging system is made up of a cylindrically bent Laue single silicon (5,1,1) crystal monochromator, scanning and positioning stages for the subjects, flat panel (area) detector, and a data acquisition and control system. Depending on the crystal's bent radius, reflection type, and the horizontal beam width of the filtered synchrotron radiation (20-50 keV) used, the size and spectral energy range of the focused beam prepared varied. For example, with a bent radius of 95 cm, a (1,1,1) type reflection and a 50 mm wide beam, a 0.5 mm wide focused beam of spectral energy range 27 keV-43 keV was obtained. This spectral energy range covers the K-edges of iodine (33.17 keV), xenon (34.56 keV), cesium (35.99 keV), and barium (37.44 keV); some of these elements are used as biomedical and clinical contrast agents. Using the developed imaging system, a test subject composed of iodine, xenon, cesium, and barium along with water and bone were imaged and their projected concentrations successfully extracted. The estimated dose rate to test subjects imaged at a ring current of 200 mA is 8.7 mGy s(-1), corresponding to a cumulative dose of 1.3 Gy and a dose of 26.1 mGy per image. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) describe a course of action to address poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all (https://sdgs.un.org/goals). More specifically, SDG 6 clarifies how water quality, quantity and access are crucial to human well-being, and yet human activities are compromising water resources through over-exploitation, pollution, as well as contributing to the spread of disease. Globally aquatic ecosystems are highly threatened and concerted efforts by governments and civil society to 'turn the situation around' are simply not working. Human-created problems require human-centred solutions and these require different ways of thinking and acting to those behaviour patterns that are contributing to the challenges. In this paper, we first consider causal approaches to attitude change and behaviour modification that are simply not working as intended. We then explore enabling responses such as citizen science and co-engaged action learning as more tenable alternatives. SDG 6 has a focus on clean water and sanitation for all. The SDGs further clarify how the extent to which this goal can be realized depends, to a large extent, on stakeholder engagements and education. Through stakeholder engagements and educational processes, people can contribute towards SDG 6 and the specific indicator and target in SDG 6.b – Stakeholder participation. Following a three-year research process, that investigated a wide range of participatory tools, this paper explores how the Stream Assessment Scoring System (miniSASS; www.minisass.org) can enable members of the public to engage in water quality monitoring at a local level. The paper continues to demonstrate how miniSASS can contribute to the monitoring of progress towards Sustainable Development Goal Target 6.3, by providing a mechanism for data collection indicator 6.3.2. miniSASS is proving popular in southern Africa as a methodology for engaging stakeholder participation in water quality monitoring and management.
