Abstract
The year 2020 started much like any other on the United Nations multilateral calendar. But then the COVID-19 pandemic forced the UN and the world to shut down. After the initial shock wore off, secretariats and governments began to contemplate how to conduct multilateral negotiations during a pandemic. As they created new virtual working methods, they also had to figure out how to maintain trust among delegations and in the process itself to ensure the outcomes of these meetings would be respected. To understand how UN meetings adapted to a virtual environment and maintained trust, this article analyzes a sample of 18 meetings of UN environmental and sustainable development bodies that took place in the 12 months between April 2020 and March 2021. The research examines these cases to see how these meetings were conducted, how they built the necessary trust, and what can be learned from this experience.

Abstract
Colleges and universities have a key role to play in teaching students about and implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs can be an essential tool in curriculum development while providing a structure for how universities can think about their mission and their place in society. One way to learn about the 2030 Agenda and develop a better understanding of the challenges in implementing the SDGs is to use problem-based and collaborative learning to enable students to develop projects to address selected goals and targets on campus. The use of problem-based learning uses the SDGs to educate students about sustainable development, enhance students' problem-solving skills, and prepare students for the challenges they will face in the workplace. This article describes three different iterations of an SDG project undertaken in undergraduate environmental studies classes in 2016, 2018, and 2021. After reviewing the pedagogy of collaborative and problem-based learning, this article describes the steps in this semester-long project, the outcomes, and lessons learned for future problem-based learning projects.

AbstractThe international community has been trying to find a comprehensive and effective solution to the problem of anthropogenic climate change for well over two decades. The fundamental problem posed by climate change is that any solution, if it is to be effective, requires collectively agreed upon global initiatives. If enough countries do not take sufficient action, any collective endeavors to mitigate the problem will be less effective or may even fail. As a result, mitigating climate change requires a high level of international cooperation. In the climate change arena, negotiators spent much of 2007 searching for common ground and securing universal participation in a new global regime to take effect when the first commitment period under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change's Kyoto Protocol expires at the end of 2012. This article examines one of the strategies used to address this challenge in the lead up to the December 2007 Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia: a variation of track-two diplomacy, where climate change was addressed at numerous workshops and high-level meetings to enable parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to create space for building trust and exploring innovative solutions in determining whether or not to embark on negotiations on a post-2012 regime.

In the International Organizations classroom, students learn a lot about the nuts & bolts of international organizations in theory, but do not always have the opportunity to understand how international organizations work in practice. Understanding negotiations, diplomacy, & interstate relations is essential in understanding the strengths & weaknesses of international organizations. To this end, the use of in-class simulations, where each student represents a different country, can be an effective tool in teaching students about international organizations & global governance. This article describes a simulation run in an International Organizations class in the Fall 2002 semester. It involved a fictitious serious terrorist attack in Singapore during a performance of "Kiddush for Naomi" performed by the Israel Habima Theatre Company. The article describes the goals of the simulation, the preparation the students undertook throughout the semester, the implementation of the simulation itself, & the post-simulation debriefing & assessment of the students & lessons learned for future in-class simulations. 3 Figures, 2 Appendixes, 13 References. The 1994 UN Convention to Combat Desertification is considered to be the first "sustainable development" treaty because it considers economic and social development needs while also addressing a serious environmental problem. The challenge during the negotiations was to ensure that the convention addressed socioeconomic concerns without losing sight of its mandate to combat desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa. This article examines how delegates grappled with the multifaceted causes of desertification within the context of sustainable development, which is viewed quite differently by developed and developing countries, and identifies some lessons that can be applied to future negotiations. These lessons address the difficulty of incorporating the cross-sectoral nature of environmental issues in a legally binding instrument, implementing the goals of sustainable development within the context of current North-South relations, and working under the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" for global environmental degradation.
