Sociopolitical crisis in the Balkan states, having developed to a high degree since the early 1990s, has created a zone in which organized crime groups have been allowed to flourish & take advantage of weakened local authorities in order to make this region one of the global hotspots where certain types of criminality, such as arms-, contraband-, & drug trafficking, as well as prostitution & human trade, are concerned. The shifting of border definitions between states of this region has also played a central part in the growth of organized crime groups by allowing them to expand into new territories for both illicit operations & networking. The stakes of this situation are outlined here in an attempt to illustrate the need for the international community to focus its resources on improving regional conditions in the Balkans. 10 References.
