In view of the Soviet threat facing the West, it is more vital now than ever for the US and its allies both in Europe and Asia to work together to strengthen their bonds and to overcome the economic challenges and the political quarrels that threaten the free world's cohesion. The higher proportion of defense spending of the US allows the European and Asian allies to strengthen their economies and to become more competitive in trade, to the detriment of the US.
