Cet ouvrage propose une étude de grande envergure, première du genre, sur la mémoire et le souvenir de l'esclavage. En analysant les débats politiques et académiques des vingt dernières années, l'auteur dégage deux approches : celle du soupçon politique (victimisation, instrumentalisation, surenchère) et celle du doute anthropologique (fragilité, absence, vide). Ayant établi ce constat, Christine Chivallon part alors à la recherche des traces du souvenir de l'esclavage, ainsi que des témoins qui les transmettent, pour comprendre la teneur des expressions mémorielles issues de l'expérience esclavagiste. L'étude de l'Insurrection du sud, qui a opposé, à la Martinique, anciens maîtres et anciens esclaves, en 1870, au moment de l'instauration de la Troisième République, forme le pivot de ce parcours. Elle permet de reconstituer une scène primordiale de violence et d'en trouver les expressions transmises au sein des descendants des insurgés, témoins d aujourd hui.

In this article, I hope to show how the general idea of "creolization" extends to some very different meanings, in spite of its apparent semantic consistency, often involving the ideas of intermixing and blending. Starting with a review of various texts which have given different interpretations of the term creolization, I shall identify four major fields of meaning. Those fields are defined by the way in which the authors envisage creolization in relation to two pairs of notions. The first pairing sets the cultural process against the cultural product, while the second concerns temporality, with creolization either seen as an "original" (or starting) phenomenon or as constantly moving (or becoming). The ideas which have been forged out of the perception of these pairings "divide up" knowledge of creolization across well-characterized regions, regions which this work will try to describe. In doing so, it will be a question of looking at the notion of diaspora that these different meanings involve. This article will conclude with some thoughts questioning the universality of the creolization phenomenon and suggesting that it remains dependent upon historical contexts.

The Black Diaspora or the Impossible Elsewhere. Considering confrontation to violence as a consequence of racial order specific of the Black American Diaspora, this article explores the expression of such behaviour through the study of a rural uprising in Martinique in 1870. The proclamation of the Third Republic in the French colony gives rise to an insurrection in the course of which the small black farmers, ancient slaves, try to overturn the socio-racial order which they consider as incompatible with the republican ideal of freedom. The analysis of the trial of the insurgents shows how the colonial authority reconciles speech on the disappearance of racial differentiation with the maintaining of a racial social order. These procedures of transfiguration of event, which reduce the ideal of justice of the descendants of slaves to a crime and to a betrayal, bring us back to the oppressive continuity of the racial matrix in a context where everything competed however to its adjournment.

Résumé Cet article revient sur la notion de « communauté imaginée » d'Anderson dont le succès depuis près de 25 ans ne cesse de se conforter. En dépit de cette notoriété, la notion reste pourtant fragile, traversée par des contradictions théoriques qui empêchent de clarifier le couple « réel-imaginaire ». Après avoir envisagé la principale aporie de l'approche d'Anderson qui réside dans le présupposé de l'existence de communautés réelles logées dans les relations de face-à-face, le propos se consacre à l'examen des usages actuels du modèle andersonien et à la description de deux trajectoires bien typées, l'une guidée par la figure de H. Bhabha, avec la déstabilisation du thème de la nation, l'autre placée sous l'influence de A. Appadurai avec l'insistance illimitée sur l'imaginaire. C'est après avoir posé cet état des lieux critique que l'article propose une conceptualisation du réel et de l'imaginaire des communautés. L'objectif est de dépasser la dualité de ces deux termes pour monter que le « réel » est toujours un imaginaire parvenu à se matérialiser sous l'effet des luttes pour la mobilisation des outils de la représentation symbolique.

Résumé Parallèlement aux mutations sociales et aux émergences politiques qui caractérisent l'actuel moment postcolonial en France, les postcolonial studies d'inspiration anglo-américaine commencent à se faire plus visibles dans la recherche. Christine Chivallon, pionnière de l'étude des peuples afro-caribéens et de leurs migrations « diasporiques », se montre désabusée : si les études postcoloniales possèdent une charge critique potentiellement forte et libératrice dans le contexte universitaire et politique français, elles devraient cependant, selon elle, se méfier de certains travers, notamment la tendance à fétichiser l'hybridité aux dépens d'une pleine compréhension des « constances identitaires ». Ailleurs, les recherches menées sous le signe du postcolonial se sont parfois transformées en exercices de style académiques – et en France ?

This article explores Anderson's "Imagined Communities," whose success has not ceased to solidify in the last 25 years. In spite of this notoriety, the concept remains nevertheless fragile, riddled with theoretical contradictions that thwart the clarification of the "real" and the "imaginary." After having envisaged the principle confusion of Anderson's approach, which resides in the presupposition of the existence of a real community lodged in face-to-face relations, the discourse devotes itself to the examination of current usages of the Anderson model and to the description of two well-defined paths. One path is guided by the figure of H. Bhabha, with the destabilization of the theme of the nation, and the other placed under the influence of A. Appadurai with the insistence on the illimitability of the imaginary. After having situated the critical areas, the article proposes a conceptualization of real and imaginary communities. The objective is to overcome the duality of these two terms to demonstrate that the "real" is always imaginary, struggling to materialize itself for the mobilization of the tools of symbolic representation.
