AbstractThis study empirically investigates the relationships between tariffs and non‐tariff measures before and after the global financial crisis (GFC). The panel analysis is based on traded products of 70 countries from 1997 to 2015. For developed countries, we find that tariffs and non‐tariff measures were complementary before the crisis, but they became substitutional afterward. We do not find such shift for developing countries. We also run the analysis by income levels and by types of products and observe differential effects of the GFC on the relationship between the two trade policies.

AbstractThis paper empirically examines the US–China trade war that began in mid‐2018, focusing on the impact on a third country, Vietnam. Using regression analysis, we found that while the trade war had a negative impact on US imports from China for all targeted products, there was a partial offset from increased imports from other countries. Notably, US imports from Vietnam experienced a sharp increase, particularly after the third round of US import tariffs on Chinese goods. Additionally, our research reveals that the four rounds of tariff escalation affected US imports from China differently depending on their end‐use and technology intensity.

We examine the effects of inward FDI on the distribution of plant total factor productivity. Using Korean manufacturing plant‐level data covering 1990–2007, we find that industry FDI had heterogeneous effects on plant productivity and its distribution in terms of industry characteristics, such as industry concentration index and capital intensity. While sectoral FDI drove up productivity more for plants in industries with low concentration, it had negative effects on productivity especially for the least productive plants in industries with high concentration and high capital intensity. Our results also reveal that the positive effect of FDI was greater for exporters than for non‐exporters.

Given the central role of career stress in college students' lives, this research examined whether career stress mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and career attitude maturity in a sample of 185 undergraduate students in South Korea. The results indicated that career ambiguity stress, as measured by a career stress inventory, fully mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and career attitude maturity. That is, maladaptive perfectionism correlated with greater levels of career ambiguity stress, and greater career ambiguity stress correlated with an unconstructive level of career attitude maturity. The authors discuss the findings' implications for career counselors in college settings.
