News media studies, especially in the field of the political economy of media, have traditionally been looking at frames used by news media. Structures are usually examined as follows: the words or phrases emphasized; the images excluded or trivialized; and what these frames suggest about the mediated image of public issues. Recent studies in the field of media framing have also looked at how framing is evident in media messages, which have been shown to exert some influence on the formation of attitudes, opinions, and understanding of public issues. The present study theorizes that American news media are adopting and using their government's preferred versions of foreign issues when they frame the international issues. Based on looking at the frames used by two newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, this study examines news media coverage of President George W Bush's 2002 State of the Union address.

This study examines how 2 major South Korean newspapers (Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh Sinmon) represent—specifically through framing—North Korea's national image during the 2‐year period (from 2001 to 2002). To conduct this research, framing analysis was used for analyzing media texts as a research method. According to findings, although reporting North Korean issues, the South Korean newspapers considered the relationship with North Korea and the peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula. That is, although covering North Korean issues, South Korean news media concern and reflect on their relations with the issues and political and cultural structures of their society.

This study aims to identify how American major newspapers frame the BP's Gulf of Mexico oil spill crisis in 2 major daily newspapers, The New York Times and USA Today. In addition, this study exams what kinds of themes are used in conjunction with news frames for covering the BP oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico. 489 articles were analyzed, 353 articles for The New York Times and 136 articles for USA Today. In a pretest, this study identified 6 main frames and 9 themes used by the collected news articles, and these 6 frames and 9 themes were used to analyze the collected news articles. Among 6 frames, the most common primary frame in the New York Times was attribution of responsibility, as compared to the most common primary theme in USA Today, solution. On the other hand, the most common theme in The New York Times was stopping the oil, as opposed to the most common theme found in USA Today, politics.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how Toyota managed the recall crisis through surveying public relations experts. By gathering and analyzing the perspectives of public relations (PR) executives and professors toward the Toyota recall crisis, this study tries to evaluate and measure Toyota's public relations strategies for managing the recall crisis. To collecting data, 34 public relations professors and 92 public relations practitioners were interviewed. According to the findings of this study, PR professionals emphasized that Toyota responded poorly (slowly/dishonestly) and lacked communication with the public. With regard to improvements Toyota may work on, PR experts advised not only to resolve internal corporate problems but also to strengthen the relationships with consumers and obligation to investigate further. In regarding with the lessons from the Toyota's crisis, PR professionals highlighted that it is necessary to take anticipated preventative measures and improve investigative duties and preparation for better dealing with crises.

Purpose
This paper investigates whether building a nuclear power plant in a community would inherently bring local conflict phenomena such as "not in my back yard (NIMBY)", focusing especially on the interactive effect between different types of local publics and their exposure to either a supportive or opposing message about a hypothetical local governmental plan to build a nuclear power plant on community participation intentions.


Design/methodology/approach
Applying the two theoretical frameworks (situational theory of publics and social exchange theory) to NIMBY, this study used a quantitative approach by using 471 participants in a 4 (publics: active, aware, aroused or inactive) × 2 (advocacy message type: supportive or opposing message) experimental design.


Findings
The results showed that regardless of message types, active publics were more likely to participate in community activities than any other public, but this group strongly opposed the harmful facility, while inactive publics continued to be inactive. However, aware and aroused publics were significantly influenced by messages.


Originality/value
The rationale and findings of this research are original, as they have not been published previously, and are not being simultaneously submitted elsewhere. This research should contribute to the broad body of knowledge and practices in community-based conflict issues in terms of risk management. It is believed that the discussion and implications of the findings should raise interesting areas for further research.
