As a result of the Cold War of the 1940s and the Korean War in the early 1950s, South Korea and Communist China found themselves in two opposing camps. Until the Cold War gave way to detente in the 1970s, they remained hostile towards each other. However, since the late 1970s, in the midst of changes which have occurred in Northeast Asia, Seoul has seized new opportunities in developing "non-political" contacts with Peking. The article reviews the history of Peking-Seoul relations, examines their positive and negative factors and explores the future prospects for Taipei-Seoul relations. (DÜI-Sen)

Since Japan recognized the PRC in September 1972, relations between them have grown steadily. Inspite of the absence of diplomatic relations, Japan and the Republic of China (ROC) still maintain a close and substantive relationship. Japan's political and economic relations with the PRC and the ROC are analyzed. The mechanism of semi-official relations between Japan and the ROC is described. (DÜI-Sen)
