Jane Jacobs's Cities and the Wealth of Nations (New York: Random, 1984) challenged several fundamental assumptions of the social sciences. Here, one implication of her thesis -- ie, nations that depend on the export of manufactured goods engender "elephant" cities -- is tested using UN & other data on 87 nations. The thesis is contrasted with the world-system position on primate cities. It is concluded that Jacobs's thesis is relatively unsuccessful in accounting for patterns in the data. 2 Tables, 26 References. Modified HA
