Digital twins shake up heat exchanger design: Vestas Aircoil and University of Sheffield forge a sustainable future
Beyond blueprints, beyond prototypes, lies a future where humans and machines design in harmony. Dive into the groundbreaking collaboration between Vestas Aircoil and the University of Sheffield, where digital twins unlock sustainable engineering breakthroughs. In an interview with Open Access Government, Dr Claus Ibsen (Group R&D Director, Vestas aircoil), Dr Bilal Qadri (R&D Vibration Engineer, Vestas Aircoil), Professor Atul Bhaskar and Mr Muhammad Hafizh (PhD student) from the University of Sheffield revealed how integral digital twins are to the future of sustainable engineering and their own personal work. The transition from traditional blueprints and prototypes to a future where human expertise converges with cutting-edge technology is well underway. This transformative journey finds a vivid expression in collaborative initiatives, with one noteworthy partnership being between Vestas Aircoil and the University of Sheffield.

The InDEStruct initiative was an EU-funded project to support projects through financial resources. It envisions bridging the gap between academia and industry to enhance industrial knowledge, drive innovation, and generate employment opportunities. Our project received funding from the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement.

Exploring digital twins and structural vibration in collaborative research
In discussion of their collaboration and funding in their Horizon Europe project on structural vibration, Prof. Bhaskar from the University of Sheffield and Dr. Claus Ibsen from Vestas aircoil A/S met during the application for the Horizon 2020 project which was to be the InDEstruct project. At that time, Professor Bhaskar was affiliated with the University of Southampton as the project coordinator. The project was qualified for funding under the Horizon 2020 programme and has recently been completed. Vestas aircoil A/S have agreed to co-finance 2 PhDs to be enrolled at the University of Sheffield, with Professor Bhaskar securing co-financing with funding from the research council in the UK. The long-term ambition is to produce a hi-fidelity model in the spirit of digital twins, so that design changes could be quickly accommodated. This industrial funding from Vestas will be supplemented by additional funding from the UK Research Council to support the work of a PhD student for the duration of three and a half years.

The journey to digitalization with the digital twin concept
Claus H. Ibsen and Bilal A. Qadri from Vestas aircoil A/S explore digital twins from their completed Horizon 2020 project InDEStruct, targeting a digital twin concept for their charge air coolers. In the Industry 4.0 proposal, the digital transformation of companies and the use of IoT (internet of things) explores digital twins. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical system that serves as the real-time digital surrogate, which provides indication of its engineering performance. Data is sent to the digital model from the physical product, with the purpose of the digital model being able to provide performance measures to optimize the product. Using digital twins, Vestas Aircoil A/S is currently engaged in a new project. It aims at developing cost-effective digital twin frameworks based on digital sensing units. The state-of-the-art sensing technology, computing technology, simulation acceleration and co-simulation-based digital twins used are provided by a project consortium consisting of industrial partners and academic partners.

InDEStruct: engineering advanced heat transfer systems
Within the University of Southampton, Atul Singh – also referred to as ESR1 – works on his PhD within a Horizon 2020 Programme project InDEStruct. His scope within this project is to work on optimisation and design methods to improve decision-making in heat exchanger conceptual design, in other words, a more effective design taking into account multidisciplinary aspects of such designs and reducing the experimental cost required to make decisions on new heat exchanger topologies. Open Access Government interviews members of the team of the InDEStruct project, a Horizon 2020 project which works toward inter-disciplinary design approaches for advanced heat transfer systems.
