Abstract Education is not only an innocent tool but leads to many conflicts all over the world as well. For an analysis of these conflicts one has to keep in mind that education as a concept is a culturally diverse construction with very different connotations in theory as much as in the everyday world. Taking the example of an empirical study on concepts of education and educated persons in an Indian urban middle class sample, the implications of cultural constructions of education for self concepts, social identities and therefore for social inclusion and exclusion will be discussed. Following the figure of Sanskritization by Srinivas, the founded pattern of argumentation in the data is called educationalization.
Abstract It is argued that the image of the Indian IT-Professional opens up a contact zone throughout the whole world and that it is a striking example for the structure and implications of a contact zone in the age of new media and world society. Based on the theoretical assumptions of world society (Luhmann, Stichweh), the emergence of the Indian IT-Professional as a national hero and transnational, worldwide icon of globalisation will be analysed through an indigenous perspective focussing on the Indian context itself and from a 'Western′ standpoint including observations from Germany and the U.S. The case of the contact zone established through the Indian IT-Professional shows that more than ever before in the globalised world society contact zones are established without the necessity for humans who participate in one of the involved different meaning systems to actually meet in the 'real′ world and yet that they react remarkably emotionally.
Abstract The article focuses on Ashim Ahluwalias documentation John and Jane, which describes the living conditions, life styles and ambitions of six call centre employees in Mumbai at a time when call centres were not yet questioned in Indian society in respect of their working conditions or social implications. One main focus of the documentation therefore is a more general transition of Asian countries. The call centre agents embody almost perfectly this time of transition: Indians during day time who have never been abroad but become well trained Americans at night, their bodies still in India, but their mind overseas. This striking example is taken to analyse the framing of humans in times of globalisation and the related virtuality of constructions, including their own bodies.
Whenever it comes to education in general and of women in India and everywhere else in the world in specific, this topic is coupled with very high expectations and enthusiastic statements. Education seems to provide the solution for all problems that arise on the social and individual level of a society. Such expectations on education of women, especially in India, are related to the so called "development of the nation", to the political and economic empowerment of women, to the improvement of public health and wealth etc. But education, whether for men or women, seen from a social point of view, is not as innocuous as the songs of praise suggest. In the contrary: It can have and has far-reaching consequences in many respects and these consequences are neither assessable in advance nor easy controllable. . [In her article which is based on a lecture held at the 'Conference on International Women's Day - Contemporary Indian Women: Celebrating their Spirit and Success' March 2003 in Hyderabad, India, March 2003, the author points out] some social and structural constellations which form the context for any engagement for education and which also may contribute to unintended problems. Taking the example of recent educational reform movements in India, we identify in an exemplary way nationalization tendencies in the education sector. Thereby, we stress the sociocultural embedding in the present as context of the emergence of these nationalist future visions. In the education sector, likewise as in other sectors, the past is a point of reference to legitimate and enforce specific futures. Following Appadurai, we define future as well as the past as cultural fact. Focusing upon India and the development of a new National Education Policy (NEP) as the field of study, we show exemplarily how an imagined past is used to promote the implementation of Hindu-fundamentalist educational reforms or a sanskritization of education in the present time. Finally, we discuss some possible consequences. (DIPF/Orig.)
(DIPF/Orig.) ; The article provides a general overview of the Indian school system. At the same time the main issues and challenges the system in this context is facing today are addressed. Insights to some of the today's goals of the educational politics are offered and general data on the educational system and present situation in India are given. Gender inequality, access to and success in education, efforts for quality improvement in educational contents and processes are discussed as well as modern movements regarding the privatisation of education and the emergence of confessional schools like the so called Madrasas.
