Background and aims – Large-celled Eunotia species from tropical central Africa are documented in order to define morphological variation within species and to describe new or poorly documented taxa. Methods – Samples were collected from the Congo River between Kisangani and Bumba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These samples were prepared for diatom analysis and examined according to standard methods and documented using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Key results – A single population of Eunotia zygodon is used to demonstrate the high degree of change in gross cell morphology during its life cycle, changes previously observed in cultures of this genus. Cells of this taxon from each extremity of the reproductive cycle could be, and probably often were, placed in discrete taxa during sample analysis, especially as this taxon occurs rather infrequently. We also describe Eunotia leonardii as new to science. It has an undulate valve margin and is closely related to Eunotia serra and Eunotia georgii but differs in respect to overall cell size and the structure of the terminal raphe endings. The bi-undulate Eunotia papilio var. africana is raised to the rank of species and named Eunotia fuseyi as it is clearly a discrete taxon from E. papilio s. str.

Gomphonema grande sp. nov. is described from a single sample collected from the Congo River Basin, Tropical Africa. The morphological features of the new species are described and documented through light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Gomphonema grande differs from most species of the genus by its relatively large size, robust valves, unique shape, and distinctive suite of valve features such as a labium-shaped internal stigma opening. Further discussion on the diverse nature of certain characters in the genus Gomphonema is presented

An overview of the diatom research in the DR Congo is given based on literature data starting in 1938 with the work of Zanon and excluding the East African Lakes as these were already discussed in previous papers. For each literature record the diatom genera mentioned are presented as well as all diatom taxa described from the Congo as new. In total, 106 new taxa were documented, of which Nitzschia with 40 taxa is far the most important genus followed by Navicula s.l. and Pinnularia and with 15 and 13 taxa respectively. Particular attention was paid to the local research of students found in unpublished theses at bachelor, licentiate, master and PhD level. Diatom records in these works are almost all restricted to genus level, although in the last decade an attempt to delimit species can be observed. This accompanies the renewed taxonomic interest in the Congo basin during the last decade. Renewed taxonomic interest can also be seen in the genera: the first period being situated during the lumping period, while more recent works follow the current taxonomic classification, for example Navicula s.l. versus Navicula, Cavinula, Craticula, Diadesmis, Geissleria, Humidophila, Luticola, etc.
