The Politics of Market-Based Environmental Regulation: Continuity and Change in Air Pollution Control Policy Conflict
In: Social science quarterly, Volume 83, Issue 1, p. 156-166
ISSN: 0038-4941
To expand scholarly attention to a neglected area of environmental policy & politics, I attempt to test several empirical propositions drawn from the small body of existing research on the politics of market-based environmental regulation. I analyze public comments on a recent US Environmental Protection Agency regulatory action guiding states on the design of various market-based air pollution control programs. I focus on the types of commenting organizations & the nature, extent, & foundations of their support or opposition to market-based regulatory instruments. I find more support for than opposition to the use of economic incentive programs in air pollution control. The support from business commenters is not surprising, but the level of support expressed by state regulators departs from previous research findings. Environmental groups are the principal dissenters. Overall, the findings suggest both change & continuity in the politics of air pollution control policy making, with some possibility of a shift in the contours of the advocacy coalitions in the pollution control policy network. Market-based environmental regulation is still an evolving phenomenon in American public policy. Further research on the politics of its development is in order, & the opportunities to pursue such research are substantial. 2 Tables, 13 References. Adapted from the source document.

A problem of politics of technique? Insights from waste-management strategies in Sweden and France

ISSN: 0278-4416
Compares waste disposal programs for insight into the dilemma of siting and developing a permanent waste repository. Finds that technical decisions, as well as the more obvious socio-political decisions about repository development, are shaped by deep-seated social and political forces in each nation. Author Correction: The FLUXNET2015 dataset and the ONEFlux processing pipeline for eddy covariance data
The following authors were omitted from the original version of this Data Descriptor: Markus Reichstein and Nicolas Vuichard. Both contributed to the code development and N. Vuichard contributed to the processing of the ERA-Interim data downscaling. Furthermore, the contribution of the co-author Frank Tiedemann was re-evaluated relative to the colleague Corinna Rebmann, both working at the same sites, and based on this re-evaluation a substitution in the co-author list is implemented (with Rebmann replacing Tiedemann). Finally, two affiliations were listed incorrectly and are corrected here (entries 190 and 193). The author list and affiliations have been amended to address these omissions in both the HTML and PDF versions. © 2021, This is a U.S. government work and not under copyright protection in the U.S.; foreign copyright protection may apply.
